Chicago activists to re-launch boycott of anti-gay Chick-Fil-A

Posted by Admin On August - 6 - 2012 Comments Off on Chicago activists to re-launch boycott of anti-gay Chick-Fil-A
(News from the Gay Liberation Network)
Saying that government censorship isn’t the right way to oppose anti-LGBTI Chick-fil-A chain – but use of the 1st Amendment is – Chicago activists will re-launch a boycott of the chain with a 4:30 to 6 PM protest on Wednesday, August 8.  The picket will take place in front of the chain’s only currently open outlet in Chicago, located at 30 E. Chicago Avenue.
“As our movement against Anita Bryant showed a generation ago, even very entrenched bigots can be defeated by smart and effective use of boycotts, demonstrations and other direct mobilizations of LGBTI’s and our allies,” said Andy Thayer of the Gay Liberation, the group which initiated next Wednesday’s protest.
A February 2011 article in the Windy City Times stated that Chick-fil-A founder “Truett Cathy is quoted as openly admitting he prefers married employees, ‘believing they are more industrious and productive’ [and] Anyone who applies for an operator license is asked to “disclose marital status, number of dependents and involvement in ‘community, civic, social, church and/or professional organizations.'” Not only does this discriminate against singles in general, but also people in same-sex relationships who, like in Illinois, are not allowed to marry.  For those LGBTI people who do get employed by Chick-fil-A, the corporate culture could be interpreted as constituting a hostile working environment, if we lived in a country where labor law enforcement was taken seriously.
For more information about Wednesday’s protest, contact the Gay Liberation Network at 773.209.1187 or email LGBTliberation@aol.com
Bryant was a former beauty queen and TV spokeswoman for Florida oranges and orange juice. Her anti-gay career was entitled the “Save Our Children” crusade. It led to huge spikes in anti-gay violence in city after city that it visited.  A huge proportion of our country’s early pro-gay legislation was repealed as a result of Anita Bryant’s movement.

“But she was defeated not by an expensive, slick ad campaign run by high-paid consultants,” said Thayer, “but by the mobilization of countless thousands of LGBTI’s and our allies in the streets of America.  The successful boycott of Florida oranges, and the rallies and marches that accompanied it, was our slick ad campaign.”

While many charges of censorship have been made against Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno (D-1st) for apparently wanting to prevent Chick-fil-A from opening a store in his ward, GLN contends that both Moreno and his critics miss an important point.  While it would be illegal censorship for the government to prevent a business from operating based solely on its leaders’ bigoted statements, there is evidence that Chick-fil-A may be in violation of bedrock civil rights principles that should prevent it from operating.

The Loyola University Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild initiated organizing against the store before it opened last year. They launched a boycott of the store, which is leased from the university, but the boycott was little-known off of campus.

Former NBA Star Isiah Thomas to youth: ‘You got to stop the killing’

Father Pfleger gets OK for 1-day gang peace

By Chinta Strausberg

From the moment hundreds prayed at Saint Sabina Church and began marching throughout the Auburn/Gresham community calling for peace, Saint Sabina’s Friday’s special guest, former NBA star Isiah Thomas, quickly became a magnet drawing the attention of youth he told to “stop the genocide and stop the killing.”

Thomas was a guest of Father Michael L. Pfleger, who was joined by Senator Jacqueline Collins (D-16th), Ald. Latasha Thomas (17th), John W. Rogers, Jr., CEO of Ariel Investments, CeaseFire’s Ameena Matthews, Muslim leader Rami Mashashibi, executive director of the Inner City Muslim Action Network, Marilyn Velez, lead coordinator for the Neighborhood Recovery Initiatives, Rev. Autry Phillips, the Purpose Over Pain group headed by Pam and Tommy Bosley who lost their son to gun violence, Jafar Carllouet from the Al-Hafeez Initiative and other groups.

The broad support included Matthews, the daughter of Jeff Fort and a volunteer for the Violence Interrupters, who said, “We’re here to show support. We’re taking back our streets and educating our young guys and changing their mindsets about how they feel about violence…. Repetition is the key of learning.” She teaches youth that “it’s unacceptable to hurt themselves by doing 100-years in jail for hurting another person. It’s going to take a miracle with prayer, meditation and word works of deeds. That is how things change,” she said.

There were several small miracles that happened along 79th Street where violence is usually the norm and a log of hugs from Thomas and Pfleger of young black men who in previous marches usually ran at the sight of Pfleger who only wanted to offer them an alternative to crime and jail.

District 6th Commander Eric M. Carter said, “Crime has lessen. We are at 10 percent overall decrease in crime throughout the entire district.” He attributed this reduction to “a lot of hard work, partnerships with the community you are seeing here tonight.” Carter said there is not one factor that is causing the violence in the Auburn-Gresham community.

Wearing a T-shirt that said, “I am a Peacemaker,” Pfleger marched into the turfs of three factions of one gang—factions that are responsible for the shootings some of which have been fatal and in each area he challenged the youth to a basketball match—peace for at least one day.

“We are calling it a day of truce,” said Pfleger. He’s bringing two of the three warring gangs together picking up each faction in a bus and bringing them to Saint Sabina’s ARK for a basketball match.

Pfleger told them, “imagine the day where everybody plays ball together to keep peace.” Saying he had spoken to all three factions, Pfleger said, “It’s not about who shot who. It’s the best ball player that day.” .

“You think we can do it? Are you on”? Pfleger asked, “Will you commit to it?” The youth said ‘yes.’  “OK. You’re on. I believe we all can stop this,” Pfleger told several young men promising to get a date for the tournament. “I promise you. By the time you leave here, the safety is on me. I promise you. We’ll get the three of you and play ball,” said Pfleger. Thomas vowed to return for this super game.

Thomas asked, “What ever happened to the beat down”? referring to the days when youth fought with their fists.  Pfleger added, “The gun manufacturers are making a whole lot of money and none of their kids are getting shot.”

Talking to the youth, Thomas said, “This is genocide.” “You have to stop the killing.” “The revolution is always with the young, not the old but first thing you have to do is to stop killing each other.”

Looking at Mr. Thomas, Pfleger said, “It will be a day of peace in the name of basketball, and I believe this man here can make it happen. He’s going to come back, and we’re going to reach out to some other ball players. We will have one day where the gangs will come together and have a basketball tournament at Saint Sabina,” Pfleger said.

Mr. Boseley said he would get trophies for the winners of this historic one-day peace basketball tournament.  Pfleger said he would put up cash for the team that wins. Thomas shook hands with the youth telling them to “Stay alive” and “you’ve got a shot. You can make a difference.”

Pfleger and Thomas went into several businesses including a barbershop where Thomas pretended to cut Venus McCree’s hair. He posed for several pictures with the customers.

Rogers said, “Isiah Thomas has been extraordinary today working with Father Mike on this important issue on such a critical issue for our city and for our country and for Isiah to come and be here and the spirit and leadership Father Mike Pfleger has around this extraordinary important issue. I get emotional just thinking about it. His leadership is something. There is no one like him. I’m honored just to have a chance to help and support him,” said Rogers.

Thomas said while growing up he used to go over Roger’s home and his parents shared their food with him. He thanked Rogers for that love.

Thanking the crowd for their support, Thomas said, “You never know who you’re really touching. You never know that person is going to grow up to be given the opportunity to grow up.

“I was one of those little kids from the West Side,” said Thomas. “I was one of those kids that was walking down the street and people were ashamed to look at. I felt ashamed of myself sometimes because I didn’t have enough food, didn’t have the right clothes to wear, but somebody took the time to tell me it was alright. Someone took the time to say to me that you got a chance to grow up and be something. Someone said they cared about me when I really didn’t care about myself. What you did does matter because there is someone out there that you will touch and when you touch him or her you will make a difference in their life and give everybody a chance to live, love, laugh, forgive and be happy,” Thomas told a cheering crowd.

In praying, Pfleger said, “I thank you for touching Isiah’s heart.  I thank you for the genuine, authentic heart that he showed. I thank you for his love for these young brothers who told them he valued them enough to come out here tonight.

“I thank you for the seeds that were planted.  I know that some kid no matter how hard or cold he may be to lay in his bed tonight and say Isiah Thomas came on my block. God, that makes all of that worth it,” said Pfleger.

“What we do on Sunday makes no sense if we don’t live it out on the streets,” he said.

They stopped at 79th and Ashland at the Phillips 66 Gas station and thanked the owner for agreeing to work with Saint Sabina’s anti-violence program.

And, that is what they did for more than three hours—marching, handing out anti-violence flyers and a lot of hugs and picture taking of Thomas and youth who welcomed him with open arms.

Another miracle took place a block from Saint Sabina when wheelchair-bound Ondelee Perteet, 17, who was shot in 2009 and has been paralyzed since, pulled himself up from his wheelchair to greet Thomas. Pfleger ‘s eyes glistened as Perteet proudly stood by himself. “Man, I’m so proud of you. Love you,” said Pfleger.

“That’s the beginning,” he told Perteet. Pfleger has said many times that one day Perteet will walk down the aisle of Saint Sabina where he and his mother are members. Perteet said Thomas being there “is a big help because if they see he’s out here marching around with the rest of us they’ll probably want to join to. He’s a super star marching out here.”

Black frozen pizza company loses shelf space at military commissary

Posted by Admin On August - 6 - 2012 Comments Off on Black frozen pizza company loses shelf space at military commissary
The only Black frozen pizza company in the United States loses shelf space at the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCa). Reggio’s Pizza was recently advised by its broker that its three pizza products had been discontinued for distribution at DeCa, the grocery store for our military personnel. This unjust act is deemed to be reprehensible in the Black and Hispanic communities, because it negatively impacts Black and Hispanic workers.
Reggio’s was provided distribution of three pizza product items in 2009, just after Barack Obama became President and Commander in Chief of the armed forces of the United States. Reggio’s was provided this limited opportunity after trying 15-years unsuccessfully to gain distribution.  Reggio’s was given only three items when some other pizza companies are given as many as 70 items, and as many as 8 items of the same flavor.
Reggio’s is the only African American frozen pizza manufacturer in the United States. John Clark, President/CEO said that this action is unfair and discriminates against Reggio’s because it is Black owned. Mr. Clark further stated that President Truman desegregated the armed forces by executive order in 1948. Nevertheless, we still have a long way to go in terms of racial equality; especially in the area of economic fairness and justice.
The Black and Hispanic communities are calling on Richard Durbin, U.S. Senator of Illinois; Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader of the US House of Representatives; Bobby Rush, the U.S. Representative in the District where Reggio’s processing facility is located; Leon Panetta, Secretary of Defense and all political leaders of justice and good will on both sides of the aisle to correct this discriminatory, unfair and unjust act immediately. During these tough economic times, Reggio’s, a small business enterprise with a diverse workforce, needs this business and its employees certainly need their jobs.
If you believe in justice and fairness, we are requesting you to write, call or e-mail the above mentioned political leaders and your Representatives in Congress to ask that this discriminatory action be reversed.

Bond denied for NATO protester recharged in Chicago after case was dismissed at May Preliminary Hearing

Posted by Admin On August - 6 - 2012 Comments Off on Bond denied for NATO protester recharged in Chicago after case was dismissed at May Preliminary Hearing

Occupy Walk USA participant Danny Johnson remains in jail after economic justice advocate turned himself in to fight reinstated charges that supporters say are driven by authorities’ severely distorted “priorities.” Advocates are calling for his immediate release.

CHICAGO, IL  – NATO opponents are accusing State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez of severely distorted priorities after her office steered a grand jury to reinstate charges against NATO protester Danny Johnson, whose case was thrown out by a judge at a preliminary hearing in May for lack of probable cause. Johnson was then secretly indicted by the State’s Attorney’s Office on June 29 with an additional felony charge. Johnson had originally been accused of only one count of aggravated battery of a police officer during a May 15 immigrant rights protest held in conjunction with the week of NATO-related protests. Now Johnson is charged with two counts of aggravated battery for a crime that both Johnson and eyewitnesses refute.

Johnson, who is currently in jail, was denied bond in Cook County Circuit Court today. The case is scheduled for a bond hearing on August 7.

Johnson is a member of Occupy LA and Occupy Walk USA, a national walk-a-thon from the west coast to the east coast to advocate for economic justice. In February, he began walking from San Diego to New York with other participants as part of the campaign, and was in New York when he learned about Alvarez’ move to recriminalize him.

Because Johnson had no permanent address at the time of his surprise indictment, a bench warrant was issued against him. He returned to Chicago and surrendered to authorities in mid- July after hearing of the indictment and bench warrant, where authorities took him into custody.

“Danny Johnson returned to Chicago to turn himself in because he is innocent and wants to fight these charges,” says Micah Philbrook of Occupy Chicago, which participated in organizing NATO-related protests. “It’s both telling and outrageous that State’s Attorney Alvarez is willing to criminalize dissent – and re-criminalize a peaceful protester – at the same time that she refuses to hold the police officers who killed Rekia Boyd and Stephon Watts responsible for their crimes. Johnson should be immediately released.”

The National Lawyers Guild is representing Johnson, and is committed to fighting the charges against him. Occupy Chicago has formed a committee to support those charged with serious crimes during the NATO week of actions. In particular, the so-called NATO 5, most of whom were charged with state terrorism crimes, are fervently supported and receive regular jail visits. For information on this efforts, visit: http://nato5.occupychi.org/
“Why are we wasting resources persecuting political activists when our city is mired in a crisis of police accountability?” asks Joe Iosbaker of the Committee Against Political Repression. “The police are still patting themselves on the back for brutalizing demonstrators during NATO, while the State’s Attorney’s office refuses to prosecute the crimes of police officers against torture victims and targets of police brutality – including people the police have murdered. Where are our priorities?”

Madigan: New law in effect to combat synthetic drugs

Posted by Admin On August - 6 - 2012 Comments Off on Madigan: New law in effect to combat synthetic drugs

AG Investigators, Local Law Enforcement Remove Nearly $689,000 Worth of Synthetic Drugs from Stores Statewide

SPRINGFIELD, IL — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan commended Gov. Pat Quinn for signing an important law this week that will help combat the spread of synthetic drugs in Illinois.

Attorney General Madigan’s office drafted the bill, which amends the state’s Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act to target the retail sale of synthetic drugs.  Specifically, the new law addresses the fact that synthetic drugs are packaged with misleading labels designed to give the impression that the products are legal and “not intended for human consumption.” These deceptively labeled products are then sold in retail stores.

“We have found that drug makers lure people into using these drugs by disguising them in misleading packages and passing them off as legal products.  The manufacturers are also continually reformulating these toxic substances to circumvent the drug laws,” Madigan said. “This new law ends the game of catch up and cracks down on retail sales by classifying as illegal any chemical that’s sold to be taken as a drug, regardless of what it’s called or how it’s labeled.”

The new law defines a “synthetic drug product” as any product containing a controlled substance not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  The law makes it a Class 2 felony, punishable by three to seven years in prison and a $100,000 first offense fine to sell or possess with intent to distribute any form of synthetic drug products in Illinois.  The law also significantly increases the penalty for selling or possessing with intent to distribute any drug that is misleadingly labeled, making it a Class 2 felony.

“Law enforcement now has a clear and strong prohibition on these sales that synthetics manufacturers cannot circumvent with some newly concocted recipe or modified label,” continued Attorney General Madigan.

The legislation became effective with the Governor’s signature on July 31 and was sponsored by Rep. Jerry Costello II and Sen. Kwame Raoul.

This legislation is part of Attorney General Madigan’s ongoing work with local police and county sheriffs throughout the state to address the growing use of synthetic drugs, particularly among teens and young adults. In December 2011, Madigan launched retail store sweeps, known as “Operation Smoked Out,” shortly after hosting the state’s first emergency summit to increase awareness of synthetic drugs. Since the retail store visits began, store owners across the state have relinquished more than 31,000 packages of synthetic drugs and bath salts with a street value of almost $689,000. In June, Madigan hosted a joint meeting with the Indiana Attorney General and law enforcement leaders from Illinois and Indiana to share information gathered and strategies developed by law enforcement agencies in the border states. And last month, investigators from Madigan’s office participated in the first-ever nationwide takedown of synthetic and other dangerous designer drugs.

The rise in the use of synthetic drugs can be seen in the dramatic increase in calls to Poison Control Centers about synthetic marijuana and “bath salts,” another type of synthetic drug that contains chemical compounds that mimic the effects of cocaine or methamphetamine. In 2010, Poison Control Centers nationwide received 2,915 calls related to synthetic marijuana use. That figure jumped to 6,890 calls in 2011. Reports concerning bath salts were made 303 times to Poison Control Centers in 2010. A year later, the centers received 6,072 calls about bath salts.

Senator Kirk: “The progress that I have made has been very encouraging – learning to walk again and improving my speaking skills”

CHICAGO, IL – United States Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) released a video revealing the progress that he has made in his recovery after suffering an ischemic stroke in January. Sen. Kirk recently completed a 9-week mobility study at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where he worked tirelessly to improve his walking, speech, and mobility. During the course of the study, Sen. Kirk walked a total of 14.79 miles and climbed 145 flights of stairs.

“The progress that I have made has been very encouraging – learning to walk again and improving my speaking skills, all due to the experts at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago,” Sen. Kirk said.

Sen. Kirk is back in his home in Fort Sheridan, Illinois, where he continues to work on his recovery while regularly engaging with staff and congressional colleagues regarding key issues facing our state, and nation as a whole.

Approximately 700,000 Americans suffer from strokes every year. As the fourth-leading cause of death in our nation, and one of the top causes of long-term disability, increasing stroke awareness is essential.

“I released this video to make sure that people know what my condition is, to be an example to other Illinois families…” Sen. Kirk said. “I want to thank the people of Illinois for their patience with this patient to recover from a big stroke.”

Olympic Games Foster Sporting Scams

(From the Better Business Bureau)

CHICAGO, ILWith the Summer Olympics in London off to an exciting start, the Better Business Bureau is warning sports fans and general public to be wary of scams that target consumers immersed and excited about the Olympic Games.

“Everything old is new again and these scams are no different than they have been in the past,” said Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “It is vital that people are aware of these scams, and take the necessary steps in protecting their personal information.”

The BBB warns of the following Olympic-related scams to watch out for:

  • E-mail “press releases”. According to the official website of the London Olympics, one nasty scam comes as an e-mail made to look like a London 2012 press release. If the recipient clicks on it and they don’t have proper virus and malware protection, the e-mail will try to download a Trojan horse keylogger designed to steal their information when they access their online banks and e-commerce websites. Official London 2012 volunteer and supporter emails are always sent from either support@london2012.com or support@london2012.org.
  • Lottery and sweepstakes scams. Watch out for scams saying that you have won a sizable amount of money and asking you to send them details (bank account numbers, credit card numbers, etc.) in order to claim your prize. Some of these offers even display the logos of the IOC, the London 2012 Games, and the UK National Lottery. If you respond, the scammers will gain all of your financial information and you will never see any winnings.
  • Name-borrowers. Scammers use names of real companies in hopes that consumers will be more likely to trust the offer. Here are a few of the fraudulent prize offers: Proctor & Gamble Olympic Promotion, Coca-Cola Company and London 2012 Official Award Notification, Ford Olympic 2012 Promo, London 2012/Microsoft Online Email Draw and VISA Europe Company Olympic Games Official Promotion. For more detailed information on these and a complete list of all known scams related to the current Olympics, visit: http://www.london2012.com/mm/Document/Documents/General/01/25/71/46/Detailsofknownscams_Neutral.pdf.
  • Ticket scams. Some scams will tell consumers they have won free, complimentary tickets and ask consumers to click on an attachment in order to register. In the registration process, consumers are asked to provide personal details. Some of the offers also tell consumers that all winners outside England have been granted an automatic waiver of their travel visa.

In order to avoid falling victim to these scams, never submit personal details unless the site is secure and you trust it. Look for a padlock symbol in the browser window. The website address will begin with ‘https://’. If you receive an email that looks fishy, don’t click on any links and make sure to delete the email and run a virus scan immediately.
