Former Chicago Police Commander Burge is Being Released From Prison While Those he Tortured Continue to Suffer

Posted by Admin On October - 2 - 2014 Comments Off on Former Chicago Police Commander Burge is Being Released From Prison While Those he Tortured Continue to Suffer
When Will Chicago’s City Council Pass the Ordinance Providing Reparations for the Burge Torture Survivors?

On Oct. 2nd, convicted, former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge is scheduled to be released from prison to a halfway house, while those he was responsible for torturing have not been provided any redress to recover from the torture they endured.

A press conference will be held with Aldermen, attorneys, activists and Burge torture survivors who are calling on the City Council and Mayor Rahm Emanuel to pass the ordinance providing Reparations for the Chicago Police Torture survivors.

WHEN: Thursday, October 2, 2014, 9:30 am
WHERE: City Hall, 2nd Floor
WHO: Aldermen Joe Moreno, Joe Moore and Roderick Sawyer; Torture Survivor Anthony Holmes, Joey Mogul and Flint Taylor of the People’s Law Office, Alice Kim and Adam Green of the Chicago Torture Justice Memorial Project (CTJM) and Ernest Coverson of Amnesty International, USA.

Burge is being released from prison and given the opportunity to begin his life anew with the benefit of his police pension funded by Chicago taxpayers’ money. Yet, scores of Chicago Police Torture survivors continue to suffer from the psychological effects of the torture they endured without any compensation, assistance, or any legal recourse for redress.

The Ordinance providing Reparations to the Chicago Police Torture Survivors is pending in the Finance Committee and there are 25 Alderpeople who support its passage.  It is time for City Council and Mayor Emmanuel to pass the ordinance and provide the torture survivors and their family members the recognition, compensation and services they deserve.
The Ordinance serves as a formal apology to the survivors; creates a Commission to administer financial compensation to the survivors; creates a medical and psychological center on the south side of Chicago; provides free enrollment in City Colleges to the survivors; requires Chicago Public schools to teach a history lesson about the cases; requires the City to fund public memorials about the cases; and sets aside $20 million to finance this redress, the same amount of money the City has spent to defend Burge, other detectives and former Mayor Richard M. Daley in the Chicago Police torture cases.

The NAACP’s “Justice Tour” will take President Cornell William Brooks from coast to coast to talk, listen and learn about the important work and emerging issues of NAACP field units—the bedrock of our civil rights Association.

CBC Chair Marcia L. Fudge’s Statement on Attorney General Holder’s Resignation

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chair Marcia L. Fudge released the following statement on the announcement that Attorney General Eric Holder will be resigning from the Department of Justice until a successor is nominated and confirmed:

“For almost three decades of service to this nation through the Department of Justice, Attorney General Holder has shown an unwavering commitment to protecting and defending the pursuit of justice for every American. His integrity has earned him the respect of his colleagues and his candor has earned him the trust of those with whom he served.

“As the first African American to serve in this role, Attorney General Holder has presided over the Department of Justice during a time where issues of equal treatment and protection under the law have been widely challenged and debased in our nation. However, Attorney General Holder has never hesitated to remind us that the pursuit of justice is a fundamental right and integral to the survival of our democracy.

“Members of the Congressional Black Caucus hold Attorney General Holder in the highest esteem. His departure will leave a significant void in this Administration and in our nation. Attorney General Holder will be sorely missed, but we wish him the best in the next steps of his extremely accomplished and admirable career.”

Director Mike Ray’s debut TV Pilot Presentation of “The Productive Lie” to Premiere in Atlanta area on October 4th

The premiere of director Mike Ray’s debut television pilot presentation, “The Productive Lie,” to be held at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center in Decatur, Georgia on Saturday, October 4th at 6:30pm. Those wishing to attend should RSVP at socialmedia@otgfilms.com for seating

The Productive Lie
A story about love, lies, deceit, and the pursuit of a dream

Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) — On The Grind Films, announces the premiere of its 90 minute TV Pilot presentation, “The Productive Lie”. Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker, Mike Ray. An actor and voiceover artist in his own right, Ray brings to the screen, a story that will surely send you riding on a roller coaster of emotions. Love, lies, deceit, and the pursuit of a dream…all stirred up into one man’s life… creates a series of productive lies.

“The Productive Lie” stars Mike Ray himself (Army Wives, House of Payne) as Chris Parks, mechanic by day, Internet Radio Host by night and father 24/7 to his daughter Nicole, played by NaDej Bailey (Resurrection, Being Mary Jane). With appearances by comedian/actor Rodney Perry (Madea’s Big Happy Family, Johnson Family Vacation), Tony Vaughn (Meet The Browns, Drop Dead Diva), Donna Biscoe (Rectify, Star-Crossed), DeEtta West (Marry Me For Christmas, Raising Izzie) and Brian Bremer (The Rickey Smiley Show, The Walking Dead).

Other characters in the ensemble cast are girlfriend, Morgan…best friend/girlfriend wannabe, Brittany and his vulture-like ex-wife, LaTisha. As Chris battles, side steps and pursues these three women in his life, he tries to remain steadfast on his goals. He had vowed to stay away from dating, as he cant seem to get it right…until he met Morgan. Can he keep his wits long enough to turn 1 million internet listeners into a syndicated radio deal, and keep his internet radio PowerTalk team together, long enough to make it all happen?

Much like the character Chris Parks, Ray had to keep his wits during the filming of “The Productive Lie” as he wrote, directed, and starred in this romantic comedy. “As a director and character in your own film, its hard to tell myself – the scene has ended – once I get on a roll.” he says. “There were so many moments of laughter and creativity, it was very difficult to yell “cut!” Ray further adds, “The love on this project was so great, that cast members would not leave once released for the day. Many hung around and pitched in as crew members, for fear of missing out on something extraordinary.”

Establishing a successful track record of inspiring stories, Ray (Founder of Atlanta-based Film/TV production company, On The Grind Films, LLC), recently received two awards for his documentary, “The Helen Lindsey Story”, about a quad-amputee as a result of bacterial meningitis. He has completed his screenplay for his 2nd feature, “Letters To My Father”, based on a true story of Sgt. Joseph Smith, a US Army Vet, who lost his life to ALS.
The premiere will be held at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center (3181 Rainbow Drive, Decatur, GA 30034) on Saturday, October 4th, 2014 at 6:30pm. RSVP to socialmedia@otgfilms.com for seating.

Cook County Businessman Sentenced to 24 Months in Prison for Tax Fraud

Posted by Admin On October - 2 - 2014 Comments Off on Cook County Businessman Sentenced to 24 Months in Prison for Tax Fraud

CHICAGO, IL – Judge Clayton Crane of the Circuit Court of Cook County sentenced Mohammad Aburish, to a term of 24 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections and 12 months Mandatory Supervised Release, after he pleaded guilty to the charge of Failure to File a Corporate Income Tax Return, a Class 4 felony.  As part of his plea, the Defendant was also ordered to pay $561,916.49 in Restitution to the Department of Revenue.

“Tax fraud is a serious crime, and we are gratified the sentence included a substantial prison term, in addition to requiring delinquent taxes to be paid,” said Revenue Director Brian Hamer.  “In the wake of this and other recent successful prosecutions, the Department is reaching out to Illinois retailers, reminding them that if they purchase tobacco products for resale, they must either have proof that taxes had been paid by their distributor, or they must pay the tobacco tax directly themselves.”

The Defendant was operating a tobacco distribution business called Suha & Jana Company in Orland Park.  The indictment alleged that for the entire time period charged (July 2010 – March 2012), the Defendant failed to report up to $5,655,956.00 in tobacco products purchased, sold or otherwise disposed of on the company’s tobacco tax forms, Federal Income Tax Returns or Illinois Income Tax Returns.  The indictment also alleged that the Illinois Tobacco Products Tax due on Suha & Janna Company’s unreported tobacco sales was $1,018,072.08.

The case was prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office based on a referral from the Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigation Division.

Sec’y of State Jesse White Launches Public Awareness Campaign to Highlight Penalties for Using Fake IDs

Posted by Admin On October - 2 - 2014 Comments Off on Sec’y of State Jesse White Launches Public Awareness Campaign to Highlight Penalties for Using Fake IDs

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White launched a public awareness campaign today urging college students and others to refrain from obtaining and using fake driver’s licenses and identification cards.  White underscored the severe penalties that come with using or possessing fake IDs.

“Many college students who obtain fake IDs do not think of the serious consequences,” said White.  “While their goal may be as simple as getting into bars or purchasing alcohol, anyone convicted of possessing or using a fraudulent driver’s license or ID card will receive a one-year suspension of his or her driving privileges. In addition, they face up to one to three years in prison, and a mandatory minimum fine of $500 up to $25,000 or 50 hours of community service.”

White noted that the Internet has made obtaining fake IDs easier.  Overseas companies boast of offering fake IDs for a fee.  Some students, eager to get fraudulent IDs, are falling for this illegal practice and, in so doing, are providing personal information to these disreputable companies.

“In addition to breaking Illinois law and risking their driving privileges, students are putting themselves at risk for identity theft,” said White. “Over the past two years, more than 1,200 people have been caught using fake IDs.”

White’s office will be visiting and working closely with colleges and universities around the state to further educate students on the penalties and dangers of obtaining a fake ID.  The Secretary of State’s college mobile units will help spread the message with outreach efforts and brochures.  White’s office has also released a radio public service announcement on the issue of fake IDs, which has been distributed to college radio stations statewide.

Illinois driver’s licenses and ID cards contain more than a dozen enhanced security features designed to make them secure and difficult to reproduce.  Secretary of State Police experts travel the state training liquor establishments, law enforcement, banks and other commercial entities on how to spot a fake ID.  While a fake ID may look genuine, those with a trained eye and equipment such as a black light or a laser pen can quickly tell the difference.

White also discussed the office’s Safe ID Task Force, which he established and is chaired by White’s Inspector General Jim Burns, former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, as a proactive effort to protect the public and the integrity of the driver’s license and ID card system.

“Our goal is to make Illinois driver’s licenses and identification cards as fraud-proof as possible,” Burns said.  “We continue to work through the task force to enhance the security of this vital document.”

The Safe ID Task Force is comprised of representatives from various Secretary of State Departments, including the Office of the Inspector General, Secretary of State Police, Drivers and Vehicles Services, General Counsel and Department of Information Technology.  The task force works with local, state and federal agencies to combat fake ID use, and has assisted in national and international efforts to crack down on this illegal practice.  Some agencies the task force has worked with include police, the FBI, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Houston Dermatologist Leads the Fight Against “PFB” by Creating Skin Care Products that are Easily Accessible for all now!

Posted by Admin On October - 2 - 2014 Comments Off on Houston Dermatologist Leads the Fight Against “PFB” by Creating Skin Care Products that are Easily Accessible for all now!

Houston, TX (BlackNews.com) — Moore Unique Skin Care, a Houston based, African American owned company just received notice that Walmart has agreed to carry three of its products through the Walmart “Made in the USA” program. Made in the USA is part of an effort by Walmart to create more American jobs through its commitment to purchase an additional $250 billion over a 10 year period from companies manufacturing in the U.S.

Three of the products approved to be carried in Walmart stores are Hydroglide Ascend Shave Gel, Razor Rash Relief Cream, & Clear Skin Acne Wash; they will be available in selected Walmart shelves in late January 2015.

Up to 60 % of African American and 15 % of white men suffer from pseudofolliculitis barbae (“PFB”) a condition commonly known as “razor bumps.” This condition causes the skin to be inflamed and infected because of shaving hairs, especially curly hair which grows back into the skin it can cause  scarring and discoloration in the beard & neck area.

Dr. Milton D. Moore, a prominent Houston dermatologist and pharmacist, once suffered from razor bumps & burn, so he decided to find a solution. As a result he developed Moore Unique Razor Rash Relief.  He also saw several needs with his Houston patients for skin and hair care that were not being addressed by the products on the market at the time. Using his professional knowledge of dermatology and pharmacy he created The Moore Unique Skin and Hair Care line, including an effective treatment for razor bumps, Razor Rash Relief.  In fact, several of the Moore Unique Products are so unique they have a U.S. patent. They are also manufactured and distributed out of Houston, Texas, USA.

Because of the success Dr. Moore has had in addressing razor bumps, the City of Houston Police Department has a contract with Dr. Moore for the shave products which are in their grooming policy to be used to combat the problem. Police officers must shave to be able to dawn a mask if there is an aerosol attack they are involved in. Moore Unique Razor Rash Relief Cream has helped police officers that in the past had razor bumps at such a high degree that they had requested a waiver from shaving. Now they can shave without the pain and disfiguration razor bumps can cause.

“We are excited about the tremendous expansion of Moore Unique and we will continue to develop cutting-edge products using our concept of combining unique ingredients to give consumers the most effective solutions for hair and skin care issues,” said Dr. Milton D. Moore.  “Our goal is expand the line into other beauty and personal care items and distribute them to the masses on a global level,” he added.
About Dr. Milton Moore:
Dr. Milton D. Moore is a Houston, Texas-based Dermatologist and the founder of Moore Unique Skin Care, LLC. Illinois Tollway Lowering Cost of I-Pass

Posted by Admin On October - 2 - 2014 Comments Off on Illinois Tollway Lowering Cost of I-Pass

DOWNERS GROVE, IL – The Illinois Tollway tomorrow begins offering discounted costs for I-PASS transponders to customers opening a new I-PASS account ahead of the Tri-State Tollway (I-294)/I-57 Interchange opening in October.

“The I-PASS is helping drive Illinois into the future offering a safe, fast and reliable way for our commuters to traverse our world-class transportation system,” Governor Pat Quinn said. “This reduced price will help ensure that everyone can take advantage of the incredible benefits the I-PASS has to offer.”

“The initial I-PASS payment may have been an obstacle to some of our customers so we took a substantial step to reduce that burden.” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. “Lowering the upfront cost of obtaining I-PASS will make it easier for all of our customers to have access to the benefits it offers.”

As part of a broader campaign to educate customers about the new, all-electronic interchange and encourage them to get I-PASS, the agency is temporarily lowering the cost to $30 for a new I-PASS account from the current $50 or $60.

For new customers, both the initial pre-paid toll amount and the minimum rate to replenish I-PASS accounts will be reduced from $40 to $20 for customers who open new accounts through December 31, 2014.

Additionally, the deposit required to obtain an I-PASS transponder will be permanently reduced from $20 to $10 for all account types.

For existing customers who replenish their accounts manually, a $10 deposit refund will automatically be applied to their I-PASS account balances in the form of a credit to their pre-paid toll accounts. Cash refunds will not be issued. Existing customers also can have their minimum rate to replenish I-PASS accounts reduced from $40 to $20 upon request.

To take advantage of these offers, new and existing customers must call 800-UCI-PASS (800-824-7277) weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or visit one of the Illinois Tollway’s Customer Service Centers.

These offers are not available online or at Jewel-Osco store locations.

Completing the first phase of the new interchange in October will create access from northbound I-57 to northbound I-294 and from southbound I-294 to southbound I-57, including a new interchange at 147th Street.

I-PASS discounted rates for the new all-electronic interchange will be 75 cents for cars and $1.50 for customers who pay their unpaid tolls online. Truck rates will range from $1.50 to $4.00 during daytime hours, with overnight discounts offered.

In July, the Tollway announced three new initiatives for customers planning to use the new I-294/I-57 Interchange that will make traveling on the new interchange ramps as convenient as possible.

This fall, customers who use the I-294/I-57 Interchange without I-PASS will have 30 days from the date of their unpaid toll to pay online – up from the seven days that applies to other parts of the Tollway system. This limited-time offer will expire on December 31, 2014. Beginning January 1, 2015, customers without I-PASS who use the I-294/I-57 Interchange will have seven days to pay their unpaid tolls.

For added convenience, the Tollway in September also opened a temporary Customer Service Center at the Secretary of State Office in Midlothian. This satellite center located in the heart of the Chicago Southland will remain open through November 26, 2014 to serve local residents who wish to obtain I-PASS, pay their unpaid tolls or receive other assistance.

In addition, the Tollway earlier hosted three I-PASS roadshow events to give local residents an opportunity to get an I-PASS transponder, learn how to avoid toll violations and ask questions and provide feedback to Tollway staff.

The Illinois Tollway operates the nation’s largest electronic tolling system, with more than 87 percent of all toll transactions paid electronically. Currently, there are more than 3.6 million I-PASS customers with more than 5 million active transponders.

While all of the Tollway’s recently constructed interchanges have not included a cash payment option, this is the first interstate-to-interstate connection on the Tollway system where there is no toll collection point on the mainline roadway for customers who wish to pay cash. Tollway customers who would like to pay cash to travel between I-294 and I-57 will still be able to do so at the 159th Street Ramp Toll Plaza or via the 163rd Street Toll Plaza. These are the routes being used today.

The new I-294/I-57 Interchange will be the fourth all-electronic interchange on the Tollway system. Other all-electronic toll collection points include the Illinois Route 47 Interchange on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90), the Balmoral Avenue Interchange on I-294 and the Eola Road Interchange on the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88). The $3.4 billion Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project will be the first all-electronic toll road on the Tollway system.

The $719 million I-294/I-57 Interchange is part of the Tollway’s 15-year, $12 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future. The interchange will create a long-sought connection between two major interstates in the Chicago Southland that will relieve congestion on local routes, enhance economic development and improve overall transportation throughout the region.

The interchange is expected to serve more than 76,000 vehicles per day and provide direct freight access to Chicago’s south suburbs – saving drivers $4 million annually in fuel. Tri-State Tollway drivers currently using I-80 to get to I-57 will save 25 travel hours per year using the new interchange. The full interchange is expected to be completed in 2024.

More information about I-PASS can be obtained by visiting www.illinoistollway.com.
