Illinois Attorney General Madigan calls on APPLE, GOOGLE to address mobile device privacy concerns

Posted by Admin On April - 25 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Chicago, IL — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan called for a meeting with Apple Inc. and Google executives in the wake of reports that iPhones, iPads and Google Android devices are collecting and storingdetailed information about users’ locations.

Madigan sent a letter to both technology manufacturers in response to press reports that Apple and Google mobile devices store user location information that can be transmitted back to the companies. The information – latitude and longitude coordinates coupled with a timestamp – is reportedly unencrypted and unprotected. The Attorney General has asked the companies to detail what information the company is storing, for how long and what it is used for.

“I want to know whether consumers have been informed of what is being tracked and stored by Apple and Google and whether those tracking and storage features can be disabled,” Attorney General Madigan said. “It’s important that these companies ensure that their users’ private information is protected.”

The Attorney General’s letter is part of her ongoing effort to protect consumers’ personal information online. Madigan and her counterparts in states around the country launched an investigation last year into Google’s collection of data over wireless networks for its Street View mapping feature. In addition to featuring photographs of neighborhoods nationwide, Street View captured data being transmitted over public networks, including user emails, passwords and web surfing activity.

Trump singlehandedly revives “Birther” issue

(From New America Media)

By Earl Ofari Hutchinson

Forgotten in the furor over Orange County GOP Central Committee Member Marilyn Davenport’s vile, vicious, and blatantly racist depiction of President Obama and his family as chimps is the reason that she did it. The caption underneath the photo read, “Now you know why no birth certificate.” The timing for the “satire,” as Davenport lamely explained in her bogus defense, was no accident. It came within days after real estate mogul (and would-be GOP presidential candidate) Donald Trump continued to harp on President Obama’s alleged status as an “illegal alien.”

Over the last year or so, the birther issue had largely receded into the netherworld of fringe, kooky ideas. But Trump—who has the name identification, media allure, and money to make an impact—single-handedly pushed the issue front and center once more. Trump is shrewder than GOP party regulars and much of the media realize. He quickly understood that, to gain attention as a potential 2012 candidate, he had to have some issue, a hook, that would get the media and GOP party tongues clucking and establish him as a force to be reckoned within the Republican Party. Talk of the debt, tax reform, deficit reduction, jobs and the economy would not do it. Mainstream GOP leaders and would-be candidates, all with much more political experience and credibility than Trump, had already staked out that turf. The only surefire issue that could get the requisite media attention and the public’s ear was birtherism. The strategy worked.

Trump pounded on the issue and the media took the bait. Then the mogul slyly backed off for a moment and talked about the familiar, substantive issues of trade, China, and the economy. But birtherism was never far from his agenda. He returned to the topic at a recent Tea Party pep rally in Boca Raton, Florida; and in an interview the day after the filing deadline for federal taxes, he thundered that he’d publicly disclose his tax information if Obama would produce his “real” birth certificate. The gambit worked again. The media reported his remarks as a real story and ran with it. That touched off shudders among mainstream GOP leaders, who publicly scrambled to denounce Trump comments and distance themselves from him.

GOP leaders seem to have finally woken up to the Frankenstein monster that they created by either ignoring the birther movement or tacitly egging it on. The issue could turn the GOP presidential nomination derby into a freak circus. This would wreck any chance that a GOP presidential candidate has to snatch back the White House. Unfortunately for the Republicans, the monster that Trump unleashed again is back on the prowl. A legion of bloggers, websites (including the conservative WorldNetDaily), and rightwing talk show hosts, including Fox’s Sean Hannity, are once again relentlessly pounding the issue. These conservatives are read, watched and listened to, and—sadly—believed by millions of Americans.

Polls have consistently shown that a near majority of Republicans either believe Obama is not an American citizen or have doubts about his citizenship. Birtherism also has resonance among the general public, with some polls showing that a significant number of voters openly wonder about the president’s true place of birth. Trump was well aware of the number of Americans who doubt the Obama’s citizenship. And he is even more aware that the inflammatory issue is driven in part by naked racism and in part by the GOP’s loathing of Obama’s economic policies and moderate political views. Trump also has support in Sarah Palin, who publicly declared that he “is not just throwing stones from the sidelines, he’s digging in, he’s paying for researchers to find out why President
would have spent $2 million to not show his birth certificate, so more power to him.”

In the days since Trump began riding the birther issue hard, he’s forced GOP leaders to acknowledge that he’s a party thorn, either by denouncing him—as former President George W. Bush chief strategist Karl Rove did—or by praising him, as Palin did. Trump even got Obama to stoop down and publicly comment on the issue of his birth, something that he had scrupulously avoided.

A recent straw poll showed that Trump’s birther crusade has paid off. He now tops the most favored list of potential GOP presidential candidates. The straw poll is, of course, just a popularity poll at this stage of the political game. But it does provide evidence that the birther issue is again a “legitimate” talking point issue and concern for millions.

That’s bad news for GOP mainstream leaders, who now say they want the debate over Obama’s birth, and Trump, to go away. That’s not going to happen anytime soon. Trump and the birther issue are just too juicy and irresistible for much of the media — and worse still, for millions of Americans—to ignore. The GOP has only itself to blame.

Washington, DC – Dr. Frank Smith, executive director of The African American Civil War Museum and Memorial,  has issued the following statement upon the death of Larry Dillard, the long-time Communications Director and life-long friend of U. S. Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-Va.):

“We are so saddened to hear of the passing of Larry Dillard. He was a very, very good friend of ours and a person who was dedicated to preserving the memory of African American soldiers of the Civil War. Larry worked with us in the planning of our April 12the program to commemorate the start of the Civil War.  From the podium, he talked about the contrabands (enslaved Africans) coming into the area around Fort Monroe down in Hampton, Virginia, where Hampton University now sits. He also talked about the jubilation that they felt, knowing that they were going to get their freedom here in the United States.”

Congressman Scott announced a memorial service was held for Larry Dillard on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. at Ivy Baptist Church 50 Maple Avenue Newport News, Va. 23607. The 59-year-old died shortly after taking ill April 20 while on a historical tour of Fort Monroe with Congressman Scott and Senator Mark Warner.

Congressman Scott’s office has also announced that “In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum in Washington, D.C. at www.afroamcivilwar.org.”

In accordance with his wishes, Dr. Smith says a special fund will be set up in the honor of Dillard.  “Larry was an ardent supporter,” said Dr. Smith. “So we are honored to remember him and very pleased that he has chosen to leave us in his memory and his wishes. We certainly look forward to sharing the story about his great legacy with the rest of the world.”

Tavis Smiley launches 10-city “Fail Up” Tour

Posted by Admin On April - 25 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

 Award-winning broadcaster releases new book about building success from failure

New York, NY (BlackNews.com) — In 2009, TIME magazine named Tavis Smiley to their list of “The World’s 100 Most Influential People.” Surely such an overachiever could never be labeled a failure. Successful business owner, notable philanthropist, host of his own national television and radio programs – these aren’t the descriptions we’d normally hear about someone who’d been fired or arrested, who left college degreeless, or said “no” to a dream-come-true opportunity in the profession he longed to break into.

Yet all of these – and more – describe a Tavis Smiley who has embraced his “success scars” in FAIL UP: 20 Lessons on Building Success from Failure (ISBN: 978-1-4019-3390-6, $19.95, SmileyBooks hardcover, 288 pages, May 1, 2011). After an existential crisis on his 40th birthday left him feeling like he’d never accomplish all he wanted to in this life and thus die a failure, Tavis undertook an unprecedented self-examination. Realizing his own success, like so many others’, was born out of overcoming setbacks and failures, Tavis set about putting his story into words to help others understand the universal truth: There is no success without failure.

FAIL UP is a lesson plan for those confronted by the inevitable letdowns, fall-throughs, and setbacks of life. Broken out into 20 chapters, Tavis’ testimonies are pulled from his life, as well as today’s headlines. The stories in FAIL UP range from the private and personal to the public and professional, inspiring and challenging us to take what looks like an ending and make it a new, better, more true beginning. Whether young or old, student or professional, media mogul or nine-to-fiver, FAIL UP shows how we all can turn a step backward into a surge forward if we seize the opportunities found in failure.

Beginning in Los Angeles, CA on April 21, Tavis’ 10-city FAIL UP Tour is traveling the country, inspiring fans – old and new – to reexamine their approach to life’s challenges and teaching them how to FAIL UP. The remaining tour dates and cities are:

* New York City – April 26-27
* Winston-Salem, NC – April 30
* Washington, DC – May 5
* Philadelphia, PA – May 6
* San Francisco/Oakland, CA – May 10
* Atlanta, GA – May 12

Gov. Quinn announces increased Bicycle Safety Reporting

Posted by Admin On April - 25 - 2011 16 COMMENTS

New Tracking of “Dooring” Crashes Will Identify Problem Areas

(From the Active Transportation Alliance)

Chicago, IL – Gov. Pat Quinn announced that the state will begin tracking “dooring” crashes — accidents involving bicyclists who are struck by opened doors from parked cars. The change will take effect immediately to help determine locations where road improvements and public outreach efforts may be necessary to protect bicyclists from these dangerous collisions.

“As more people are riding bicycles and embracing other green modes of transportation, we need to ensure that Illinois collects data that presents a complete picture of what is happening on our roads,” said Governor Quinn. “This new initiative will address a major safety issue for bicyclists and drivers, and will make our roads safer for everyone.”

The new policy is the result of collaboration between Governor Quinn, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Active Transportation Alliance. Prior to the change in policy, dooring collisions went unrecognized in IDOT’s annual reporting of traffic statistics because a moving motor vehicle was not involved.

The data collected and analyzed by IDOT can be used to plan for improved roadway designs and additional communication with motorists in areas with high concentrations of bicyclists.

“We appreciate Governor Quinn’s action on this issue,” said Ron Burke, executive director of the Active Transportation Alliance, an advocacy organization that works to improve conditions for walking, biking and transit. “Data on dooring problem spots will help communities take steps to reduce these collisions. We are grateful IDOT will track these crashes, and look forward to working with them to increase safety and education surrounding dooring.”

To assist police in submitting the correct information, IDOT’s Division of Traffic Safety is reaching out to law enforcement agencies across the state with instructions on how to begin recording dooring crashes. Police departments that have already have begun tracking dooring collisions, including Chicago, will have their data included in the state’s traffic statistics, retroactive to May 2010.

“We are committed to working with our partners in law enforcement to make roads safer for bicyclists,” Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig said. “Safety always will be a top priority at IDOT. The recognition of dooring accidents is another step in the right direction.”

Bright solar energy promises should not blind consumers to contractor scams

Posted by Admin On April - 25 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS
 (A Message from the Better Business Bureau)

Chicago, IL – Warmer weather and sunny skies combined with higher electric rates are causing some people to consider green solutions to their economic problems.  Solar energy is one option for long-term cost savings.  However, a homeowner must do the homework to make sure solar energy power is a practical and money-saving alternative, not just an idealistic choice.

Solar energy scams have all the hallmarks of the typical contracting scam. Fraudulent contractors prey on those who are unfamiliar with their product. They may show up at your door, advertise in local papers or deliver fliers to your home. Like the typical contracting scam, solar paneling scams can range anywhere from issues with the installation and costs to the actual solar panels themselves.

“As with any kind of home improvement contractor, consumers need to be cautious of installers that promise too-good-to-be-true offers,” says Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “It pays to look beyond the lowest bid when selecting a contractor.”

There are many state and federal rebates that offer a reduction in the initial costs of solar energy products. However, consumers who opt for a “greener” remodel this spring need to be wary of the less-than-reputable and unqualified contractors that breeze into town promising a variety of “green” services at cut-rate prices. Consumers need to find an installer that is trustworthy and knowledgeable on the benefits of solar energy.

The BBB recommends considering the following before investing in solar energy:

Determine if solar energy is right for you. Due to the high costs associated with the initial investment of solar power, it is important to conduct a self energy audit to determine if solar energy is right for you.

Consider all the costs associated with solar energy. Ask about all the costs associated with the maintenance and upkeep of the system. Determine if the benefits and savings outweigh the costs over the long run.

Stay informed about state and federal incentive programs. Depending on your location, state and federal programs may help with high installation costs. Be sure to understand the terms and conditions of the incentive programs and conduct your own research prior to signing a contract with an installer. For the latest information on state programs, visit http://www.dsireusa.org/

Be cautious of installers that promise no out of pocket costs prior to reviewing your specific situation. Be leery if an installer suggests obtaining credit for the full amount of the system even though they are promising very low or no costs due to rebates.

Make sure the roof of your home is equipped to sustain a solar panel system. Even though a properly installed solar system will not damage your roof, make sure your roof is in good condition before you begin the installation to avoid any future problems.

Understand how your solar energy works. You can take full advantage of the benefits in solar energy once you know how it works. For instance, panels installed facing no shade obstructions will receive maximum sun thus providing the greatest percent of energy.

Anti-Violence demonstrations continue in Newark, New Jersey

The Newark Anti-Violence Coalition (NAVC) and Parents Of Murdered Children (PMC) Unite at 91st Straight Anti-Genocide (Anti-Violence) Demonstration in City of Newark

Newark, NJ (BlackNews.com) — They are calling on 10,000 strong for peace and justice. The Newark Anti-Violence Coalition (NAVC) will host the longest running anti-genocide (anti-violence) demonstration in the United States at the steps of Newark City Hall. They will be joined by Parents of Murdered Children (PMC), a community-based anti-violence group composed of parents who have lost their children to violence. Both groups will protest together to bring attention to Black and Brown violence plaguing the city of Newark and to call for justice for the victims of violent crime! This demonstration will make the 91st straight week the NAVC has been organizing anti-genocide (anti-violence) rallies in the city of Newark, NJ.

Concerned about the growing pandemic of violence plaguing Black and Brown neighborhoods, community activist and Southward Councilman Ras Baraka (the son of internationally and nationally respected poets and activists Imamu Amiri and Amina Baraka), Nation of Islam member David Muhammad, and Black Cops Against Police Brutality founder Delacy Davis, made the calls to create the N.A.V.C! The founding date of the N.A.V.C was on July 20th 2009; the date of the murder of Nakesia Allen, a mother of two children innocently killed by a Blackman trying to shoot at another Blackman in a drive by shooting while walking home from her neighborhood store on Meeker and Elizabeth Avenues in Newark, NJ.

The Newark Anti-Violence Coalition became a broad coalition of activists, teachers, principals, lawyers, revolutionary members of the Bloods, and Crips, social workers, progressives, churches and masjids (Mosques), community – based organizations, victims of violence, aunts, uncles, mothers, brothers, sisters, fathers, and concerned citizens of the community!

The N.A.V.C has been leading anti-violence civil disobedience protests, peace rallies, and demonstrations all over the city of Newark, N.J. ‘s major and minor intersections for 91 straight weeks. The strategy is simple: inconvenience the city by bringing traffic and business activity to a halt, to give attention to issue of poverty and violence (genocide / self-genocide) plaguing the city’s Afrikan American and Latino American communities in Newark and throughout America!

Dawn Hayes, a member and organizer of Newark Anti-Violence Coalition, says, “the violence that is plaguing Black and Brown communities in Newark and around the world reflects deeper and neglected underlining issues such as poverty, drugs, the crisis in the family, the high incarceration rates of Black men and women, joblessness, colonialism, neo-colonialism, White supremacy, Black and Brown self-hatred, and the counter intelligence program (COINTELPRO).”

Bashir Akinyele, press officer, member and organizer of the Newark Anti-Violence Coalition, says, “it is a travesty that both Afrikan Americans and the larger American mainstream society have internalized and accepted this racist notion that Blacks and Latinos have no humanity worth giving any respect or attention to.” He adds, “Black and Brown violence must be placed on a national agenda to make this problem a local and national public health emergency.” He continues on with this, “unfortunately, America has closed its’ eyes to the genocidal conditions raging in Black and brown neighborhoods. These conditions will have grave consequences for the future of Afrikan Americans, Latino Americans, women, elders, children, and the United States of America if we as a society continue to ignore this disease!”

The Newark Anti-Violence Coalition (NAVC) and Parents of Murdered Sons (PMS) on April 20 protested due to disease of Black and Brown self-genocide (self-destruction) and genocide (violence) plaguing the city of Newark, NJ and in Black and Brown America! Anti-Violence demonstrations were held at the steps of Newark City Hall, 920 Broad Street, Newark, NJ. The Demonstration highlighted the following issues:

* Educational budget cuts affecting our children, schools, and community.

* Ending police brutality, harassment, and the unfair treatment of our citizens by the police.

* The enforcement of the Amistad Bill in all public school curriculums in an effort to address and destroy systematic and internalized self-hatred.

* Calling for all street organizations (gangs) to lay down their guns and adopt non-violent conflict resolution strategies.

* The lack of jobs.

* Community organizing to end urban street violence plaguing the city of Newark (i.e. Motivating citizens to join in the struggle to make our streets safe.)

* The immediate demand for urban street violence deemed a Public Health Emergency in the city of Newark.

* The calling for the firing of Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy.

* To point out Mayor Cory Booker and his administration’s unwillingness to meet and work with key community-based leaders and organizations to help reduce the level of violence in Newark by organizing a mammoth town hall meeting!
This demonstration marks the 91st consecutive week of anti-violence civil disobedience protests organized by the Newark Anti-Violence Coalition in Newark, N.J.!
The Newark Anti-Violence Coalition Mission Statement:
The Newark Anti-Violence Coalition is a community-based organization composed of many community leaders, community organizations, religious leaders, races of people, and concerned citizens committed to stopping the pandemic disease of violence plaguing Afrikan American and Latino American communities in the city of Newark, NJ and throughout the tri-state area! They tirelessly organize and challenge the people, the block, the streets, the schools, the clergy, and elected officials one mind at a time to fight violence of any kind! Their rallying cry is the following: Stop the Shooting! Stop the Killing! Stop the Violence! Black Power! All Power to the People! Hotep (Peace)!
