The search continues for all Lincoln documents

The Papers of Abraham Lincoln receives two major grants to continue its search for all documents written by or to Lincoln

Springfield, IL – The search for all documents written by or to Abraham Lincoln will continue, aided in large part by two major grants from federal agencies.

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) will fund the Papers of Abraham Lincoln with a $143,446 grant in their Publishing Historical Records category.  This grant helps fund projects that document major historical figures and important eras and social movements in the history of the nation.  The NHPRC is the sole federal funding agency whose focus is documenting the heritage of the United States.  In existence since 1934, it has awarded grants for preserving, publishing, and providing access to vital historical documents.

As previously announced by U.S. Senator Richard Durbin, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded The Papers of Abraham Lincoln matching funds of $250,000 over the next three years, a $50,000 increase over the project’s current three-year grant of $200,000 from NEH.  The Scholarly Editions and Translations grant supports the preparation of editions and translations of pre-existing texts and documents that are currently inaccessible or available in inadequate editions.  Grants typically support editions and translations of significant literary, philosophical, and historical matters.

Both grants are being awarded to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation for disbursement to The Papers of Abraham Lincoln.

“The receipt of these two grants represents both validation of our progress thus far and vital support for our continuing efforts to locate and make available the documentary record of Abraham Lincoln’s fascinating life and career” said The Papers of Abraham Lincoln Editor Daniel Stowell.

Both the NHPRC and NEH awards are effective July 1, 2010 and will support salaries for project staff who are conducting research at the National Archives and Library of Congress in Washington, DC and who are transcribing and annotating documents in Springfield.  Both organizations supported The Lincoln Legal Papers, the predecessor to The Papers of Abraham Lincoln, with a series of grants between 1991 and 2006.  These latest awards represent the fourth annual grant to The Papers of Abraham Lincoln by the NHPRC and the third multi-year grant from the NEH since 2004.

The Papers of Abraham Lincoln is a project of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois whose goal is to identify, digitize, transcribe, and publish comprehensively all documents written by or to Abraham Lincoln during his lifetime, 1809 – 1865.  The Center for State Policy and Leadership at the University of Illinois Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Association serve as project co-sponsors.  They have completed The Papers of Abraham Lincoln:  Legal Documents and Cases, published in 2008 by the University of Virginia Press; and The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln, Second Edition published online in 2009.  More information about the project can be found at http://www.papersofabrahamlincoln.org.

Dr. Maya Angelou asks African-Americans to participate in Alzheimer’s study

NEW ALZHEIMER’S STUDY SEEKS TO FIND EARLIEST CLUES TO DISEASE PROGRESSION

Researchers are working on ways to protect people from Alzheimer’s disease, a problem particularly devastating to African Americans.

(BlackNews.com) — African Americans have significantly higher rates of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and will continue to live with this reality unless new prevention strategies are discovered. A study funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) may help provide some answers. This two-year, $24 million study – the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative Grand Opportunity (ADNI GO) – focuses for the first time on people experiencing the very earliest complaints of memory problems that affect their daily activities. ADNI GO expands on the groundbreaking Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) and will continue efforts to identify biomarkers that can help build a greater understanding of the progression of AD.

According to the 2010 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures Report, African Americans are about two times as likely as their white counterparts to develop Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Although there appears to be no known genetic reason for these differences, complicating health conditions that disproportionately affect African Americans, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, can increase the risk of developing AD. The ADNI GO study is looking to involve people from the black community to ensure that the research will benefit all races and ethnicities.

“Despite their increased risk, African Americans are less likely than whites to receive a diagnosis,” said Dr. Thomas Obisesan, a principal investigator at Howard University, one of the ADNI GO study sites. “As the number of African American afflicted with this devastating disease continues to rise, it is becoming increasingly important to ensure that our work accurately reflects this population.”

Maya Angelou, the eminent poet, author, educator and historian, is lending her support to the national ADNI GO campaign. Dr. Angelou, a professor at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, is working with their researchers to encourage African Americans and their families to take part in the study and ensure that communities of color are appropriately represented. For more information about the study and to learn how to participate at one of the 50 research sites across the U.S., contact the NIA Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Referral (ADEAR) Center: (800) 438-4380 or www.adcs.org/Studies/ImagineADNI.aspx or follow Alzheimer’s Disease Research on Facebook.

ABOUT HAWTHORNE:
This June, the hit series returns with star and executive producer Jada Pinkett Smith (The Women, The Matrix trilogy) as Christina Hawthorne, a Chief Nursing Officer ready for battle on the front lines of a war against declining patient services and hospital budget cuts. As the second season of HAWTHORNE opens, several Richmond Trinity doctors and nurses have been transferred to James River, a failing hospital in terrible shape. There, Christina butts heads with the ER’s head nurse, Gail Strummer (Vanessa Bell Calloway – The District), who is extremely set in her ways. Christina is impressed, however, by the charming Dr. Steve Shaw (Adam Rayner – Mistresses), who hails from England, and the hard-working ER clerk Marcus Leeds (Collins Curtis Pennie – Half Nelson), who has his eye on Camille. Christina and Tom will try to forge a romantic relationship, especially now that he is no longer serving as Chief of Surgery and can devote more time to patient care and a private life. Bobbie will once again find herself helping out homeless mother Isabelle. Ray’s lust-hate relationship with Dr. Marshall will hit some snags over Ray’s continued feelings toward Candy, who is serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Kelly’s confidence as a nurse will slowly build, thanks in part to her work with a nurse (guest star Sarah Gilbert – Roseanne) who’s even more insecure. And Camille takes a step toward adulthood that her mother isn’t sure she’s prepared to take. Created by Emmy® winner John Masius (St. Elsewhere, Providence, Dead Like Me), HAWTHORNE comes to TNT from Sony Pictures Television in association with Pinkett Smith’s 100% Womon Productions, John Masius Productions and Jamie Tarses’ FanFar Productions. HAWTHORNE is executive-produced by Pinkett Smith; Masius; Glen Mazzara (The Shield, Crash, Life); and Jamie Tarses (My Boys).
