Speaker Boehner “Standing in the Way of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act”

John Boehner should be ashamed of this:

Right now, he’s the one standing in the way of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a bill the Senate passed in a bipartisan vote last year.

Because Speaker Boehner refuses to let the House vote on it, in dozens of states there are no state laws protecting LGBT Americans from being fired because of who they are or whom they love.

President Obama just took a big step forward, by proposing an executive order prohibiting all federal government contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity. This one action will cover nearly a quarter of our nation’s workforce, from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies.

But Speaker Boehner and leaders in the House are standing in the way of extending those protections to every American.

Across the country, some interest groups are actually trying to expand legal discrimination against LGBT Americans. In Arizona, the legislature passed a bill to make it OK for businesses to refuse service to same-sex couples. In Oregon, a group tried to pass a ballot initiative to do the same thing.

In 2014, it’s sad that some groups are still holding on to the past — but thanks to the efforts of grassroots organizers, these initiatives failed.

It’s a reminder that we can’t stop fighting for equality. All that work is paying off: In the past year alone, the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, and 10 more states have embraced marriage equality. That’s amazing progress, and it’s picking up speed all the time.

More than two-thirds of Americans support passing ENDA — now is the time to remind everyone exactly who’s standing in the way.
