Take Action

On January 9th, a massive chemical spill poisoned drinking water across 9 West Virginia counties. 300,000 people lost access to tap water, all the while breathing in the eerie licorice smell that blanketed the region.

More than 400 people went to the hospital for chemical exposure during the first weeks of the spill. Demand justice for them now.

It didn’t take long for Governor Tomlin to lift water restrictions, but residents know better. Almost nothing is known about the effects of the two spilled chemicals. A lingering chemical smell and recent school closures means that the convenience of local water just isn’t worth the risk.

The spill and its aftermath are a matter of public safety and equal access to life’s most basic necessity: water. And they hasn’t been properly handled since day one.

Freedom Industries and the coal industry as a whole are to blame. But don’t expect the state government to do anything about it — they’ve already proven to us that they won’t. For some real changes, sign the petition to President Obama demanding the termination of West Virginia’s mining enforcement program.
