‘Enigma’ tells story of a girl struggling to cope with damaging effects of parental neglect
“Being a parent is undoubtedly one of the toughest tasks on earth,†Talva writes. “Nevertheless, a parent’s flagrant-foul on the parenting field can be extremely damaging and detrimental to their child’s emotional well-being. Good children can make bad parents, just as bad parents can make good children.â€
“Enigma†is set in California and tells the story of Crystal, her mother, Sharon, and her father, Stoney. Sharon and Stoney are neglectful parents, and Crystal has a tumultuous childhood as a result. She endures mental and physical abuse and winds up carrying a lot of emotional baggage. However, she’s not completely alone – Armondo is another main character who serves as a safe haven, and Babygirl, Crystal’s cousin, is her closest confidant.
Talva is hopeful that Crystal’s story will give readers hope and leave them feeling empowered. “I want them to leave this book having an understanding that despite being in the perils of destruction in the beginning, that they can overcome the emotional baggage,†she writes. “I want them to be encouraged that life can be great, and that although the remnants from their past may always be present in their future, they do not have to be forever bound by it.â€
