Minister addresses rising murder rate with Gangsta fiction novel

Oakland, CA (BlackNews.com) — Oakland California’s murder rate has risen 33% since New Year’s Day, and human trafficking is an ever growing epidemic. Oakland minister, Harry Williams addresses both of these issues in his latest urban fiction work, Straight Outta East Oakland 2: Trapped On The Track.
The novel tells the story of Crayon, a 15 year old foster child entrapped in the vicious world of commercial sexual exploitation. Her situation seems hopeless until her grandmother approaches the former gang member who led her own daughter into a life of crime. What follows is a roller coaster ride into a world of mayhem and genocide. The book explains the world of post civil rights urban America. It also challenges church members, politicians and community residents to wage war for their communities.
Critical acclaim has surrounded the book’s release. Community activist, Henry Hitz wrote: “…You breathe humanity into characters the rest of society has discarded and that fills me with hope. The only thing that comes close is the The Wire, the greatest thing ever on TV.”
Harry Louis Williams, is an associate minister of the Allen Temple Baptist Church. He uses the medium of urban fiction as a tool to reach inner city young people. His first novel, Straight Outta East Oakland won the Foreword Magazine award for best multicultural fiction in 2008. Piri Thomas, author the timeless urban classic, Down These Mean Streets, wrote, “…Bravo Brother Harry for letting us into that cutthroat world and showing us the possibility of hope and redemption.”
