Chicago GOP to Sue CPS Over School Walkouts

Posted by Admin On March - 14 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

Chicago Republican Party

CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Republican Party is preparing to sue Chicago Public Schools over CPS plans to stage pro-gun control rallies during the school day tomorrow.

Gun control advocacy groups are organizing a national student walkout tomorrow to protest the Parkland shooting and press for additional gun laws. Nominally a student-led walkout, some schools are taking an active role in organizing the rallies and compelling students to participate.

An email sent by the principal of Lincoln Elementary School in Chicago to parents stated:

This coming Wednesday, March 14 many students/schools across the nation (and globe) are going to participate in a school walkout demonstration at 10:00 AM to support the memory of those that were killed in the Parkland, FL shooting and also to demonstrate their right to express their opinion about gun control.

At Lincoln, we will also participate in a walkout.

The email went on to explain how grades 5 – 8 will be taken outside for a “silent demonstration”. Students are encouraged to bring posters. Students who do not wish to participate will be sent to a room where they can wait, away from their peers. Classes are cancelled during the walkout.

“It’s appalling that 10 to 14-year-old kids would be coerced, by their teachers, to participate in a political demonstration,” said Chris Cleveland, chairman of the Chicago GOP. “A 10-year-old kid isn’t going to have an informed opinion on these political matters, and shouldn’t be expected to have the fortitude to hold a different opinion from everyone else in his or her classroom. This is political indoctrination, pure and simple.”

“It’s a violation of CPS policy, of state law, and of the First Amendment for a government-run school to organize a political demonstration and pressure students to participate in it,” said Cleveland.

The Chicago GOP has sent a letter to CPS CEO Janice Jackson asking CPS to cancel the demonstrations, and will likely sue if they do not.

The Chicago GOP has also filed a complaint with the CPS Office of Inspector General, Nicholas Schuler. (The CPS OIG is at http://cpsoig.org, 773 534 9400).

A copy of the email from Lincoln Elementary is below.

Dear Lincoln families,

This coming Wednesday, March 14 many students/schools across the nation (and globe) are going to participate in a school walkout demonstration at 10:00 AM to support the memory of those that were killed in the Parkland, FL shooting and also to demonstrate their right to express their opinion about gun control.
At Lincoln, we will also participate in a walkout. Due to PARCC testing, we will have our walkout in the afternoon instead of at 10:00AM. Parents are free to participate if they wish. Please read below:
  1. On Wednesday, March 14 our walkout demonstration will be for grades 5-8 students and teachers. Every K-8 teacher and staff member is welcome to participate, of course, if they are free at this time.
  2. Here is a way grades K-4 students can participate in an activity on March 14:
  3. There will be a silent demonstration from 3:28-3:45 (1 silent minute for each person that lost his/her life in the Parkland shooting) in front of the school on Kemper Place. We will ring an old fashioned hand bell to signal the beginning of the silent demonstration. The 3:45 dismissal bell will ring at 3:45 to signal the end of the silent demonstration. Everyone is asked to remain silent from 3:28-3:45.
  4. Note that a 3:35 school bell will ring but this will NOT signal the end of the demonstration. Please disregard this 3:35 school bell during the silent demonstration.
  5. Kindergarten students will still be dismissed at 3:40.
  6. At 3:45 when the dismissal bell rings, the teachers will dismiss the students home from the silent demonstration. 3:45 is our regular dismissal time.
  7. This 17-minute silent solidarity stance will not interfere with our PARCC testing because we will be done before 3:25.
  8. Individuals may bring appropriate posters, if they desire.
  9. Our official stance is that this walkout is to demonstrate a memory of those lost lives in the Parkland shooting.
  10. If students or others wish to demonstrate regarding their views on gun control, etc. that is their right. School personnel is not making judgement calls; we do ask for peace, respect, and decorum.
  11. If there are students that do NOT wish to join the demonstration, the teachers will direct them to the main office with their items to go home and we will point them in the right direction to a location where they may be free to stay until 3:45. They will be dismissed from this location at the 3:45 bell.
  12. It is advised that teachers and parents speak to the children prior to the March 14th walkout at 3:25 so they put the demonstration into perspective and make connections.

Wake-Up America! President Donald Trump is Positioning Himself to Govern the United States for an Unprecedented Period!

By Harold E. Bailey
President & Founder of ProbationChallenge & the PCC Network

Wake-Up America! President Donald Trump is positioning himself to govern the United States for an unprecedented period! Heard in recent dialogs was that he is in for the long haul…and, thusly, planting subliminal seeds as he rests under the assumptions that changing of the president’s term-law will help to accommodate his insanities.  Unfortunately, President Trump believes everything he utters!  However, take note that when the Head of the United States Aches … the Body Profoundly Ails!

As tax-payers examine as to who in government is ailing, they find the disposition rest by-large at the feet of Republicans. A large portion of the Republican Congressional body has become frightened to halt the terrorist sitting in the seat of authority who is tearing into the core-fabrics of this country!  Without question, this delegation of Republicans has sold itself to the highest bidder… with defying silence for the sake of filthy-greed! They have elected to choose riches and possessions rather than to represent U.S. citizens. Their utmost concern exceeding the welfare of humans is to maintain a congressional seat!

Civilized politicians both Democrats and Republicans once lifted the U.S. Congress as the highest body of leadership in the land and were once proud to have youth emulate them! However, in the last year many have separated from their invaluable principles and have surrendered their morals to the absurdity flowing from the bowels of the 45th president!

Immeasurable taxpayers have become hypnotized with disbelief as they look into the eyes of representatives who were elected to represent them! These were the officials sworn to uphold the U.S. Constitution and to preserve justice for all… now, many have made a transition into the political arms of prostitution under the Trumps spell.

Trump along with other insidious political favorites have fallen from grace and will remember that the loss of morals, principles and spiritual ethics will ever be remembered in the archives of history.

While fraudulent politicians fear for the loss of local and a congressional seat … they have put their own biased needs over the needs of their constituents!  This belligerent agents-of-government wink at righteousness and representative of greedy-dogs who return to eat their own vomit. That vomit was that which they spewed out to clean up the Nation from bullies, mobster-actions and muscle men who gangland their way into the halls of government … they now violate decency!

In an act of transformation, these unwise legislators have now become disciples of President Donald Trump… who merely come to rob, steal, kill and to destroy the core-fabric of these Not-So-United States!

I humbly suggest that the United States government consider an aggressive house-cleaning! This cleaning process should reflect removing the harshness that has caused this country to be greatly divided! There must be priority regarding the stench that was derived from the deportation of families!  During this cleaning, there should be a methodology set-forth that would give youth a chance to security a quality education and a cause to live into adulthood!  An impetus from the government that would be an incentive for families to live wherever without discrimination or fear of harassment from neighbors or that of the police.

Sanity and its attributes can be accomplished… in this century, if the head of this nation would consider taking leave of nonsense and jump into the saneness that all men/woman are created equally by God, the creator of all mankind.

An awesome difference would and could take place should the government focus on youth who have fallen victim to the orchestration of crime, drugs and street violence! This second-chance would be a ‘hands up’, especially for the heroin and other devastating physical and mentally impaired!  Those sitting in congressional seats of judgment ought to remember that drugs are ‘those drugs that the U.S. government’ with or without justification allow into this country frequently by default!  Building the Trump Wall’ is yet another ‘Trump Tower’ and yet another mere distraction which will not make the difference anticipated. Change come about by a shifting of attitudes coupled with honest spiritual communications in prayer. This could be the beginning of a grand difference!

The public is currently deliberating about their hard-earned-dollars – rather eat or pay for medicine. Remedy to much of these dilemmas could be in ridding Washington, Chicago, and local political offices of puppets who dangle financial promises to them by deranged puppeteers. These puppeteers are draining tax-payers of their finances while they in-fact run quickly to the bank.

Taxpayers have just-cause to send meaningless officials into the sunset to never reenter government service! Then again, taxpayers (employer) must awaken and seek diligently to rid these United States of political loafers who swallow-up public’s tax dollars – giving inconsequential returns.  These questionable politicians sitting on the seats of complacency should first be considered for incarceration for raping the public and should thereafter stand in the unemployment line!

Head Of Stock Trading Operation Admits Role In $3 Million Cross-Country Insider Trading Ring

Posted by Admin On March - 14 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

TRENTON, N.J. -The owner and operator of a stock trading operation today admitted participating in a multi-year insider trading scheme that made over $3 million in illicit profits by exploiting material information in violation of confidentiality agreements, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.

Steven Fishoff, 60, of Westlake Village, California, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael A. Shipp in Trenton federal court to Count Four of an indictment charging him with securities fraud.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:

On numerous occasions between May 2010 and August 2013, Fishoff, Ronald Chernin, 69, of Oak Park, California, Steven Costantin, 57, of Farmingdale, New Jersey, Paul Petrello, 56, of Boca Raton, Florida, and Joseph Spera, 56, of Boca Raton, short-sold the securities of numerous public companies using inside information obtained by Fishoff and others.

For each of these offerings, Fishoff or one or more of the day traders that he employed – including his friend, Chernin, and his brother-in-law, Costantin – entered into confidentiality or “wall-crossing” agreements as representatives of Fishoff’s trading entities, whereby they agreed not to disclose or trade on inside information concerning the offerings, such as the name of the issuers and the timing and pricing of the transactions, and were “brought over the wall” for the narrow purpose of determining whether to purchase the offered securities.

In breach of these confidentiality and trading restrictions, Fishoff tipped Petrello and Spera – identified as “CC-1” in the indictment – with the inside information about the confidentially marketed offerings, including the stock trading symbols of the companies and the timing or pricing of the upcoming offerings.

In furtherance of the scheme, Fishoff short sold the stock of the public companies, including Synergy Pharmaceuticals Inc., based on the inside information, in anticipation of a drop in the stocks’ price when the stock offerings were disclosed to the public. Fishoff and his co-defendants traded through the accounts of their respective trading entities or through related accounts that they controlled.

Fishoff and his co-defendants used the inside information to gain more than $3 million in illegal profits over the course of the three-year scheme. Chernin and Costantin, who executed trades using Fishoff’s capital, along with Petrello and Spera, generally split their profits with Fishoff on a 50-50 basis as compensation for the inside information.

Fishoff faces a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a $5 million fine on the securities fraud charge. Fishoff also agreed to settle the parallel civil forfeiture action, United States of America v. The Contents of Wedbush Securities Account Number 8313 et al., and to forfeit the over $1.6 million in assets sought by the government in that complaint. His sentencing is scheduled for June 20, 2018.

Chernin, Costantin, Petrello, and Spera have all pleaded guilty for their involvement in the scheme and await sentencing.

U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito credited special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Timothy Gallagher in Newark, for the investigation leading to today’s guilty plea. He also thanked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s New York Regional Office, under the direction of Regional Director Marc P. Berger and Senior Associate Regional Director Sanjay Wadhwa, for its assistance.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shirley U. Emehelu, Chief of the Asset Recovery and Money Laundering Unit, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas P. Grippo of the Economic Crimes Unit, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Devlin of the Asset Recovery and Money Laundering Unit.

NAACP Joins in Call by Civil Rights Groups Urging Attorney General Sessions to Include Civil Rights in DOJ’s Priorities

Posted by Admin On March - 14 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

BALTIMORE — The NAACP, the nation’s foremost civil rights organization, along with other prominent African-American civil rights organizations, has sent a joint letter strongly advising U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to maintain the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) commitment to the civil rights laws – a commitment which Congress has entrusted it to enforce. The letter is in response to last week’s leaked draft of Session’s strategic plan. The plan noticeably lacked a dedicated effort to enforcing principal civil rights statutes.  The joint letter reiterates to the Department of Justice, its legal and moral responsibility to protect fundamental civil rights for all across the United States.

“Protecting and enforcing civil rights for everyone in this nation should be of the utmost priority to the Department of Justice and Attorney General Jeff Sessions,” said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP. “It’s important that we do not allow those institutions responsible for protecting the infrastructure of civil rights abdicate their duty or purposely engage in a silent war against our freedoms by supporting policies which allow for a slow disintegration of the hard-earned freedoms, so many sacrificed their lives for.

”The letter was co-authored by Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP; Sherrilyn Ifill, President and Director-Counsel of LDF; Kristen Clarke, President and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law; Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League; Reverend Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the National Action Network; and Melanie L. Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation and Black Women’s Roundtable.

National Urban League: Education is the Civil Rights Battle of this Generation

Posted by Admin On March - 14 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

Meeting of Governor, Civil Rights Leaders and Clergy “Encouraging”

ALBANY – The National Urban League today joined other civil rights leaders and clergy in calling for equitable education funding and transparency in New York’s state budget.

“More than six decades after the Supreme Court declared that segregation has no place in public education, America still fails to provide an equal opportunity for all students,” National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial said. “Schools in poor communities in New York are underfunded. New York State needs an education funding formula that corrects inequity, and a commitment to transparency so New Yorkers can hold leaders accountable.”

Morial said students of color are much more likely to attend schools where three-quarters of the students or more are poor or low-income, and poor districts with a higher proportion of students of color have been shown to receive substantially less state funding than comparably poor districts that have more white students.

The clergy and civil rights representatives who gathered at the Capitol today met with Governor Cuomo and said they were encouraged by his commitment to address educational equity in the next budget.

Referring to a statement yesterday by New York State Budget Director Robert Mujica, Morial said, “The National Urban League agrees with Governor Cuomo’s position that chronically low performing schools should be the state’s priority for attention and funding. Morial agreed that the state’s approach to funding must acknowledge that there are two separate education systems in the state, “not public and private, but one system for the rich and one system for the poor.”

The National Urban League recently launched No Ceilings on Success, a national campaign to hold states accountable to their plans for achieving educational equity under the Every Student Succeeds Act. For more information, visit www.naturbanleague.org

“The nation needs a deliberate focus on ensuring that underfunded and under resourced schools, communities and students receive what is necessary to achieve both educational equity and excellence. Simply focusing on the total amount spent on education does not specifically address inequity, nor does it ensure that students get what they need to be successful.” Morial said.

Attorney General Madigan Defends Constitutionality of Anti-Discrimination Laws

Madigan & 18 Other Attorneys General File Amicus Brief in Case of Minnesota Business Refusing to Offer Videography Services for Same-Sex Weddings

CHICAGO, IL  – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, along with 18 other attorneys general, filed an amicus brief defending the constitutionality of Minnesota’s anti-discrimination law.

The brief was filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in the case of Telescope Media Group v. Lindsey. The case was brought by the owners of a videography business that do not want to offer their services at weddings for same-sex couples as required under the Minnesota public accommodations law. The company is challenging the law, claiming it violates the freedom of speech and free exercise of religion of the First Amendment.

“American laws recognize that people, whoever they love, have the right to live free from discrimination,” Madigan said. “Businesses that offer services to the public cannot discriminate against members of the LGBTQ community by cloaking themselves in the First Amendment.”

In the brief, the attorneys general write that states across the country have enacted laws to prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ people in the commercial marketplace, and that “these laws ensure equal enjoyment of goods and services and combat the severe personal, economic, and social harms caused by discrimination.”

The attorneys general argue that, under a long line of Supreme Court precedent, requiring businesses to comply with such laws does not violate the Constitution. Madigan and the other attorneys general further argue that the First Amendment exemption to public accommodations laws sought by the business would dramatically undermine anti-discrimination laws.

In part, the brief states:

“Allowing commercial businesses to use the First Amendment as a shield for discriminatory conduct would undermine state civil rights laws and the vital benefits they provide to residents and visitors, leaving behind a society separate and unequal by law.  Many Americans would face exclusion from a host of everyday businesses or, at the very least, the ever-present threat that any business owner could refuse to serve them when they walk in the door—simply because of their sexual orientation, or their race, religion, or gender.”

Joining Madigan in filing the brief were the attorneys general of California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.

State Senator Collins: Check Cashing Rate Compromise Will Spare Some of the State’s Poorest

“We must continue to reform a system where those with the least pay the most.”

SPRINGFIELD – A rate hike on check cashing services will be lower than originally proposed, and rates for those on public assistance will become lower, under a compromise reached.

Illinois State Senator Jacqueline Collins joined activists from a number of groups pushing against a higher proposal at a press conference today to thank advocates and explain the impact of new rates.

“Today is a good day for unbanked households, which are disproportionately lower-income, African-American, Hispanic and working-age people with disabilities,” said Collins (D-Chicago). “working with the Woodstock Institute and other consumer advocates, we were able to protect consumers from an across-the-board double-digit increase on the maximum fees that could be charged for check-cashing by Currency Exchanges. Most importantly, public assistance checks will see a rate decrease. We must continue to reform a system where those with the least pay the most.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Veto of SB1657. the Gun Dealer Licensing Act “…is a punch in the gut to victims of gun violence and their families…”

Posted by Admin On March - 14 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

Statement From Kathleen Sances, President & CEO of the Illinois Gun Violence Prevention PAC (GPAC)

“This veto is a punch in the gut to victims of gun violence and their families who dedicated years of their lives to get this bill passed. The Gun Dealer Licensing Act had the potential to save thousands of lives and instead of following suit with cities like the Village of Lyons, which passed its own version of this legislation catching 51 guns in the first year and a half alone, the governor instead decided to stand shoulder to shoulder with the NRA. And now, thousands more lives might be lost because of his inaction.”

About G-PAC:

The Gun Violence Prevention Action Committee (G-PAC) is a nonpartisan political action committee dedicated to electing public officials with the courage to stand up to the gun lobby. In 2013, gun violence victims and survivors created G-PAC to counter the political influence and clout of the gun industry. By providing strategic campaign support to committed legislators, G-PAC aims to protect communities from the gun violence epidemic, which takes an average of 1000 lives each year in Illinois.

With support from a growing bipartisan coalition of legislators committed to ending this epidemic, G-PAC fights for the passage of sensible gun safety measures supported by gun owners and non-gun owners alike. These measures include lifesaving legislation that keeps guns out of the hands of criminals, gang members, domestic abusers and the dangerously mentally ill. Railroad Workers and Concerned Community Leaders Protest Dangerous Conditions on Freight Railroads

Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division of the

International Brotherhood of Teamsters

Chicago is the central railroad hub for America’s cargo supply chains. Millions of rail cars come through Chicagoland annually. As corporate executives from the large Railroads gather in downtown Chicago, rail workers and community leaders will bring attention to the safety disasters waiting to happen on America’s railroads and potentially here in Chicago.
The big, Class 1 Freight Railroads in the United States and Canada are making record profits. Trump’s tax break will render even more earnings. Yet the Railroads continue to skimp on needed maintenance, worker training and safe staffing levels in their attempt to satisfy institutional shareholders.
A worsening safety record is the result of this irresponsible corporate governance. Derailments of trains carrying hazardous, explosive cargoes happen daily in North America, putting the public and the environment in harm’s way. Most of these derailments go unreported because they happen in remote, unpopulated areas.
However, since the Lac-Megantic (Quebec) oil train derailment in 2013 where 47 people died, the big Railroads have aggressively cut the staffing levels needed to maintain safe railroads.
In fact, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) reports that in 2017 there were 1,190 derailments in the United States. 888 people died in railroad related incidents in 2017.
This raises real concerns for Chicagoland, the primary rail hub for North America’s sensitive cargo supply chains. It’s only a matter of time before the kind of derailment that hit Plainfield, IL on July 1, 2017 visits Chicago itself. Communities and rail workers suffer when profits are put before safety.

Senate Committee Questions Bank on Security Measures

Posted by Admin On March - 14 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

CHICAGO, IL – Representatives of Fifth Third Bank addressed concerns from the community today surrounding what some have called onerous security measures at branches in some Chicago neighborhoods.

Senator Jacqueline Collins convened a hearing of the Senate Financial Institutions Committee at the Michael K. Bilandic Building to ask why some Fifth Third Bank branches in predominantly minority communities are equipped with buzz-in doors and metal detectors, citing other parts of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs that have had robberies but do not feature similar security measures.

“In addition to concerns that these inconsistent security practices may send a message of exclusion or prejudice to account-holding customers and members of the community, there have been questions about how difficult this can be for persons with disabilities,” Collins said. “I hope today’s meeting will foster greater understanding between Fifth Third Bank and the community and that it encourages them to adopt a security framework that protects its employees, property and assets while also protecting the dignity of its customers.”

The committee heard testimony from Eric Smith, regional president of Fifth Third Bank and Marsha Lee and Pam Bosley, members of the Auburn-Gresham community, who expressed their concerns about the practices.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger of the faith community of Saint Sabina also spoke to concerns he heard from the community, calling the doors “jail-like” and the security measures discriminatory.

In closing, Collins asked for a summation of the methodology and procedures involved in selecting bank branches for heightened security features. Collins is chairperson of the Senate Financial Institutions Committee.
