National Urban League President: Harriet Tubman Decision is “Major Development”

Posted by Admin On April - 21 - 2016 Comments Off on National Urban League President: Harriet Tubman Decision is “Major Development”

NEW YORk – National Urban League President Marc H. Morial today called the U.S. Treasury’s move to replace Andrew Jackson with Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill a milestone for racial reconciliation.

“For generations, America has struggled to confront its greatest sin and acknowledge the dark cloud it cast over much of our history,” Morial said. “The replacement on the $20 of a slaveholder who denounced abolitionists with one of abolition’s greatest heroes is a major development in coming to terms with our history.”

Morial said placing an African-American hero and a woman on U.S. currency could have a tremendous impact on the way children of color, particularly girls, see themselves.

“Too many of our children have to actively seek out historical heroes who look like they do,” Morial said. “This is an act of respect that will go a long way toward placing African American history at the center of our nation’s discourse.”

Madigan: Illinois Residents Again Ignored by House Republicans’ Failure to Support Millionaire Surcharge

Posted by Admin On April - 21 - 2016 Comments Off on Madigan: Illinois Residents Again Ignored by House Republicans’ Failure to Support Millionaire Surcharge

SPRINGFIELD, IL. – House Speaker Michael Madigan released a statement following Wednesday’s vote in the Illinois House of Representatives on a constitutional amendment to increase state funding for elementary schools and high schools through a surcharge on millionaires:

“For the second time in less than a year, Republican legislators have rejected the wishes of their constituents and opposed a measure requiring the top 1 percent to pay more to help boost education funding in Illinois.

“This proposal is not a partisan issue. An advisory question on this matter was put to voters in the 2014 general election and it received over 60 percent support statewide. The people of Illinois spoke – they believe a surcharge on millionaires is a good way to get our schools the help they need. We should listen to the wishes of our constituents, not big business or the 1 percent who would put profits ahead of our children’s education. Unfortunately today, Republicans again failed to listen to their constituents.

“This constitutional amendment would give Illinois residents the ability to decide whether the state constitution should be amended to increase the income tax on multi-millionaires to provide additional dollars for schools across the state. All revenue from this proposal – an estimated $1 billion annually – would be distributed to school districts on a per-pupil basis.”

NAACP Statement Regarding Charges Filed in Flint Water Crisis

Posted by Admin On April - 21 - 2016 Comments Off on NAACP Statement Regarding Charges Filed in Flint Water Crisis
NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks released the following statement after three individuals were charged in relation to incidents that led to the Flint water crisis:
“These latest charges are a welcome development but the investigation into this manmade disaster that has permanently damaged the well-being of thousands of residents of Flint, Michigan, particularly children, must be unrelenting. The charging of these three individuals must not signal the end of an investigation, but must be considered the beginning of an ongoing and transparent process that can only result in every single individual who played a role in the poisoning of an entire generation being held accountable.

“Governor Snyder’s pledge to drink Flint’s water for a month rings hollow to the thousands of people whose only source of water for years was tainted with deadly levels of lead.  We continue to hold Governor Snyder accountable for a timeline, a deadline and price tag.  The residents of Flint continue to await a date when they will know safe drinking water will flow through their pipes, and they continue to await an answer to the question of who will provide the required resources to assist their children for the rest of their lives.”

The three individuals charged are: Mike Glasgow, Flint’s laboratory and water quality supervisor; Mike Prysby, an official with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ); and Stephen Busch, a district coordinator for the DEQ’s Office of Drinking Water and Municipal Assistance.  The charges filed include tampering with evidence, willful neglect, misconduct, evidence tampering and violations of the Safe Water Drinking Act.

In February, the NAACP formally requested that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) launch civil and criminal investigations into the disastrous water crisis in Flint, Michigan.  In a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, President Brooks requested that all applicable components of the DOJ investigate potential environmental and civil rights violations to prevent future harms to Flint residents, to ensure that all possible measures are taken to remedy past harms to Flint residents, and to hold accountable those responsible for the crisis.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chairman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) and CBC Diversity Task Force Co-Chair Rep. Barbara Lee (CA-13) congratulate TaskRabbit for being the first technology company to adopt a CBC TECH 2020 African American Inclusion Plan, which outlines steps the company will take to increase its African American representation. TaskRabbit’s new African American CEO, Stacy Brown-Philpot, announced the details of the plan in a blog post today.

“When we launched CBC TECH 2020 last May, we called on nonprofits and tech companies to adopt plans, unique to each organization, that would increase African American inclusion,” said Chairman G. K. Butterfield. “Last year seven nonprofit organizations announced the adoption of plans. Today, TaskRabbit becomes the first technology company to take an important step by announcing a plan, with measurable goals, to increase African American inclusion in the company. We call on other tech companies to get off the sidelines and work with the CBC to develop African American Inclusion Plans.”

“I am extremely pleased with TaskRabbit’s continued commitment to diversity,” said California Rep. Barbara Lee. “I congratulate Stacy on her promotion to CEO of TaskRabbit. She is one of just a few black female CEOs at high-profile tech companies, and more companies should follow TaskRabbit’s lead. Technology is a driving force in our economy, and African American inclusion in the tech industry is vital and long overdue. We’re making progress but much work remains.”

Rep. Butterfield will join Ms. Brown-Philpot in a live chat on Product Hunt today to discuss the plan and call on tech companies to take bold actions to increase African American inclusion.

State Rep. Harper Votes to Increase Education Funding

Posted by Admin On April - 21 - 2016 Comments Off on State Rep. Harper Votes to Increase Education Funding

CHICAGO, IL – Illinois State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, voted this week for a constitutional amendment increasing funding for local schools by creating an additional tax on millionaires.

“The condition of education in many Chicago neighborhoods is in a sorry state,” said Harper. “Books are outdated, there are not enough desks to go around, and buildings are falling apart. Ensuring that our children have access to the quality education that will help them pursue their dreams and compete for good jobs is one of the most fundamental ways we can reform Illinois.”

Harper, who represents the majority of the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago, is a vehement advocate for an increase in education funding. On Wednesday, she voted in support of House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 26, which would have taken a step toward the creation of a dedicated source of revenue to public schools across the state by authorizing a 3 percent surcharge on incomes greater than $1 million per year. Despite an advisory question on the 2014 ballot showing overwhelming support for this measure across the state, Republican Governor Bruce Rauner and his allies blocked passage of the amendment.

“This measure would have ensured that the wealthiest people in our state – the people who can afford it – pay their fair share, to help improve education in communities where families are struggling,” said Harper. “I am frustrated and disappointed by politicians who talk about reform but are really only interested in protecting the very wealthy. I expected better, and the people of Illinois deserve better.”

Sean O’Casey’s Tragic Story of Rebellion Crashes Head First Into Wayward’s Immersive Style

CHICAGO, IL– After a short hiatus, Wayward returns to the stage, or rather, their tavern roots- commemorating the centennial anniversary of the 1916 Easter Uprising in Ireland. With a gritty, in-your-face reimagining of O’Casey’s social justice piece The Plough and the Stars. In true Wayward fashion, audiences are invited into the action, or at the very least to post up on a neighboring bar stool.

The third of his “Dublin Trilogy”, O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars was originally produced in 1926 at the Abbey Theater in Dublin. Most striking and still relevant is O’Casey’s vision of his leading lady: “Nora voices not only the feeling of Ireland’s women, but the women of the human race. The safety of her brood is the true mark of every woman.”

Johnny O’Hagan’s serves as the pub and parlor, and onlookers will witness The Clitheroe family as their home becomes a battlefield. This tragicomedy is a cautionary tale of the effects war has on those left behind. Join the revolution- with fiery feuds and a punchy soundtrack- grab a drink at the bar, and follow along as the rebellion unfolds around you.

Notorious International Computer Hackers Sentenced

Posted by Admin On April - 21 - 2016 Comments Off on Notorious International Computer Hackers Sentenced

Two international computer hackers from Russia and Algeria were sentenced to lengthy prison terms yesterday for their roles in developing and distributing a prolific piece of malware known as SpyEye. The malicious code caused hundreds of millions of dollars in losses to the financial industry around the world.

Aleksandr Andreevich Panin, 27, from Russia, was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison, and Hamza Bendelladj, 27, from Algeria, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in federal court in Atlanta, Georgia.

SpyEye is a sophisticated code designed to secretly automate the theft of confidential personal and financial information such as online banking credentials, credit card information, usernames, passwords, and other personally identifying information. Between 2009 and 2011, SpyEye was the preeminent malware for cyber criminals and was used to infect more than 10 million computers that caused close to $1 billion in financial harm to individuals and institutions.

Panin was the primary developer and distributor of SpyEye. He conspired with others, including co-defendant Hamza Bendelladj, to market various versions of SpyEye through the Internet. Prior to his arrest, Panin was planning to release a second version of SpyEye that could have been one of the most undetectable pieces of malware ever distributed.

Panin was arrested by U.S. authorities in 2013 when he flew through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. In 2014, he pled guilty to conspiring to commit wire fraud and bank fraud. Bendelladj was apprehended in Thailand in 2013 and extradited to the U.S.

“Through these arrests and sentencing, the risk the public unknowingly faced from the threat posed by the imminent release of a new, highly sophisticated version of SpyEye was effectively reduced to zero,” said J. Britt Johnson, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Atlanta Field Office. He added, “The arrests and sentences serve as a strong deterrent to future malware developers and their customers, regardless of where they are located.”
