President Obama Nominates Justice Wilhelmina Marie Wright to Serve on the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota

Posted by Admin On April - 16 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

WASHINGTON, DC – President Barack Obama nominated Justice Wilhelmina Marie Wright to serve on the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.

“I am proud to nominate Justice Wilhelmina Marie Wright to serve on the United States District Court bench,” said President Obama. “She has a long and distinguished record of service, and I am confident she will serve on the federal bench with distinction.”

Justice Wilhelmina Marie Wright: Nominee for the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota
Justice Wilhelmina Marie Wright has served as an Associate Justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court since 2012. Previously, she served as a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals from 2002 to 2012 and on the Ramsey County District Court in St. Paul, Minnesota from 2000 to 2002. Prior to her appointment to the bench, Justice Wright served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Minnesota from 1995 to 2000. From 1991 to 1995, she was an associate at Hogan & Hartson LLP (now Hogan Lovells LLP). She began her legal career as a law clerk for Judge Damon J. Keith of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from 1989 to 1991. Justice Wright received her J.D. in 1989 from Harvard Law School and her B.A. cum laude in 1986 from Yale University.

College Loan Scams Can Cost You Much More Than Money, Warns the Better Business Bureau

Posted by Admin On April - 16 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

CHICAGO, IL – Student loans are a huge part of college for parents and students. The process of applying can be stressful and frustrating. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning students and parents to beware of scams and unnecessary fees from loan consolidation companies and organizations.

“Student loans are becoming essential because the cost of college is rising,” said Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “Unfortunately, some companies are trying to take advantage of struggling families looking for funding by charging for students to start the application process. Applying should NEVER cost you money.”

Robert Caulfield of Chicago had an issue with a loan consolidation company. “I authorized them to take three $200 payments from my account and consolidate my loans. They told me to stop paying on the loans because they would take care of the payments. A few months later I realized that they were taking out some smaller amounts like $50 or $75 that I didn’t authorize. Then I got collection notices and found that they never made any payments. I am in worse shape [now] then when I got started.”

The BBB recommends listening for the following red flags when given advice when given student loan advice:

  • “You cannot get this information anywhere else.” Information is widely available in financial aid offices and often very conveniently on the internet.
  • “May I have your credit card or bank account number to hold this?” This is never a requirement for a legitimate loan.
  • “Buy now or miss this opportunity.” Don’t give in to pressure tactics. Remember, the “opportunity” is a chance to pay for information you could find yourself for free.
  • “We guarantee you’ll get aid.” A company could claim it fulfilled its promise if you were offered student loans.

With new Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign aimed at teaching youth entrepreneurship

Beverly Broadus Green speaks about her new Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for YouthBloc, aimed at empowering at risk youth.

Beverly Broadus Green

Los Angeles, CA (BlackNews.com) – Beverly Broadus Green, an African American ordained evangelist, published author, public speaker, and mother of entertainer Snoop Dogg, has launched a 40-day crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds for her latest project. An education-based social platform aimed at helping at risk youth succeed in school, in business and in life.

“I’ve spent the past 35 years working with youth, community leaders and at-risk youth programs around the country in an effort to keep our youth in school, and away from crime, jails, gangs, and early death,” said Beverly. “I’ve learned first-hand what our kids in the inner city need most; jobs, education and opportunities to earn money legally. Its simply just not available on the large scale they need. So I’ve helped create YouthBloc to fill this huge void, and save countless young lives across America.”

In 2015, YouthBloc will premier as the first ever social platform uniting and educating youth and their supporters, to get to the root of these and other profound youth problems such as: escalating high school dropout rates, financial illiteracy, and devastating gang violence. More specifically, YouthBloc will teach youth fundamental life, job, and entrepreneurial skills through interactive lessons and virtual mentors; thus helping youth earn real income.

“Today, a large disconnect exists between youth and income generating opportunities. At a time when youth unemployment rates in America are nearly triple the norm, it’s no wonder more and more youth are getting in with the wrong crowds while trying to make money; causing over 90% of youth crimes in America,” said Sovante Brooks, age 17, Co-Founder of YouthBloc.

On April 15th, 2015, YouthBloc will be launching their crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to gain support for the completion of the platform and raise awareness for the #YouthBloc movement. YouthBloc’s goal is to Unite, Educate, and Transform youth through entrepreneurship. “YouthBloc is being built from the ground up, but we need your help!” says Beverly. “Together, we can make a difference!”

About YouthBloc
YouthBloc is an online social education platform aimed at revolutionizing the way teens and young adults look and learn about the world of business. In an age where college tuition is skyrocketing and youth unemployment and dropout rates are following suit, YouthBloc provides an alternative to the everyday; by providing a safe, resource rich and entrepreneurial focused community for young people. Allowing youth unlimited anytime access to free educational classes focused on entrepreneurship and financial literacy combined with an innovative virtual mentor system (VMS). The VMS makes it simple youth to connect with caring professionals and community leaders, and receive positive feedback and on-going guidance. YouthBloc expects to launch in late 2015 and through its many offerings, the company expects to see a drastic reduction of youth crimes and unemployment in America, as well as a notable increase in youth entrepreneurship and inner city graduation rates.

Draft Biden 2016 Responds to Senator Marco Rubio’s Cuba Remarks

Posted by Admin On April - 16 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

Why is the Candidate of “Tomorrow” Pumping Policies fromYesterday?

Draft Biden 2016, a SuperPAC organized to draft Vice President Joe Biden into the 2016 presidential race responded to Marco Rubio’s Cuba remarks. Rubio called the decision of the Obama administration to remove Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list “a terrible one, but not surprising unfortunately.”

“So not only are Rubio’s social and economic policies straight out of the “Mad Men” era, but his foreign policy is as well,” said Will Pierce, Executive Director of Draft Biden 2016. “He’s not fooling anyone about who the real candidate from ‘yesterday’ is.”

The ongoing thawing of relations with Cuba, including the handshake between the President and Raúl Castro is yet another historic, groundbreaking accomplishment of the Obama-Biden Administration. One of the many reasons that Draft Biden 2016 hopes to get the Vice President in the race is to continue the foreign policy successes.

“Supporting a policy that failed for fifty years isn’t something the candidate of ‘tomorrow’ says. There’s nothing that smells more of yesterday’s news than our old Cuba policy,” said Will Pierce, Executive Director of Draft Biden 2016. “We believe the current administration is on the right course toward a new Cuba policy.”

The Obama-Biden administration’s shift in policy includes re-establishing diplomatic relations, facilitating an expansion of travel to Cuba, and taking Cuba off the State Sponsors of Terrorism list.

A Marist Poll conducted March 23-April 5 found registered voters approving of diplomatic recognition of Cuba 61% to 28%. Republicans were split 45% on the question.

Pfleger on Spike Lee’s “Chiraq” movie: “I trust him”

Praised Lee for taking black-on-black crime

By Chinta Strausberg

Saying he was fed up with critics of actor Spike Lee’s upcoming movie, “Chiraq,” Father Michael L. Pfleger late Wednesday night said he trust the actor he says is a “very conscious director” who is trying to find a solution to the escalating violence in Chicago.

Pfleger made his remarks during the Parish Council meeting held at Saint Sabina. “They told him “Do The Right Thing” would start a race riot and wouldn’t get David Dinkins elected,” said Pfleger, noting that there was no race riot and Dinkins was elected the first African American mayor of NYC.

On his Facebook page, Pfleger said, “I’m so tired of hearing people on FB upset about the Spike Lee movie title Chiraq…. The killing in Chicago and around the Country by both Police and Black on Black crime is Unacceptable, and it’s real,

“If Spike Lee has the courage and God knows the talent to dig into this Black on Black Crime and try to bring about a Healing and Solution…THANK GOD…. I trust Spike Lee. Everyone of his body of work has been powerful…. and to those worried about tourism…. if you’re worried then help stop the problem. Give us jobs, opportunities, economic development. Stop a Governor whose wiping out programs for youth.

“Personally, I don’t give a damn about some tourist being afraid to come here, if some child here is afraid to LIVE here… And to all those outraged about a title…are you outraged about the 1 killed and 11 shot last night”?

Pfleger explained that Spike Lee “decided to take on the issue of Black-on-Black crime and create a solution. He reached out to me last November and has spent” a great deal of time at Saint Sabina and in Chicago.

Pfleger said the script for Chiraq has already been written and that Lee has reached out to local artists like Jenifer Hudson, Common, John Cusack, Joakim Noah and others including rappers and is holding casting calls.

On the title Chiraq, Pfleger made it clear, “I have concerns about the title, but I understand and respect him.”

Admitting Lee “has been edgy,” Father Pfleger said Spike Lee “has raised the consciousness” of people. “I got to trust him as a genius…and his love for black people.” Lee is very concerned about the genocide that is taking place in the black community. “He is getting a lot of push back,” said Pfleger noting he too is being sharply criticized for supporting the controversial actor.

Having met with Mayor Rahm Emanuel Wednesday over the issue, Pfleger said, “The title is going to catch people, but his focus in the movie is to address Black-on-Black crime” and the need for this to stop.

Earlier, after the mayor met with Spike Lee, he told reporters he is not happy with the actor’s movie title “Chiraq.”

Disenfranchisement News: MD Legislature Approves Voting Rights for People on Probation & Parole

Legislature approves voting rights bill for people on probation and parole

Both the Maryland Senate and House recently approved a measure to allow people to register to vote as soon as they are released from prison. Under current law, Marylanders must complete both their prison and community supervision sentence — which can take years to decades to complete — before they are allowed to vote.

Nicole Porter, Director of Advocacy at The Sentencing Project, testified at the Maryland House Ways and Means Committee in support of the bill earlier this year. Porter said, “Voting for persons with felony convictions appears to be part of a package of pro-social behavior that is linked to desistance from crime and can improve public safety.” Other proponents included representatives of Maryland’s Communities United, the Brennan Center, and Center for Popular Democracy. If the bill is signed into law by Republican Governor Larry Hogan, it will restore voting rights to an estimated 40,000 Marylanders.

Voting rights bill appears stalled

Despite a broad coalition of bipartisan support, a measure to expand voting rights to people on probation and parole failed to get a hearing in front of the House Public Safety Committee before the deadline last month—even though the bill’s chief author, Republican Rep. Tony Cornish, is the committee’s chairman. “Until everybody is comfortable having a hearing, I’m not going to force the bill down their throat,” Cornish said. “But I’m looking forward to it if it happens.”

The bill passed through Senate committees and awaits a floor vote there. However, Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk said he is unlikely to push for a Senate vote if he thinks the House is not going to move on the bill.ational

U.S. lawmakers introduce bill to restore voting rights after prison

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) and U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) recently introduced the Democracy Restoration Act, which would give every citizen the right to vote in federal elections, unless they are incarcerated for a felony at the time the election takes place. According to the findings listed in the bill, the variation in state disenfranchisement laws “leads to an unfair disparity and unequal participation in federal elections based solely on where a person lives.”

Of the 5.8 million people barred from voting due to a felony conviction, only 25 percent are in prison. “You’ve done your time in prison, now you’re living in the community. You’re expected to abide by the rules of society, pay your taxes, get a job… It’s counter-productive to the community at large for us to essentially be treating people as second-class citizens,” said Marc Mauer, Executive Director of The Sentencing Project.

The bill also notes that state disenfranchisement policies disproportionately impact people of color, resulting in 1 in every 13 African Americans barred from voting—a rate four times greater than non-African Americans.

Last month, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) introduced the Civil Rights Voting Restoration Act, which would restore federal voting rights only for people convicted of non-violent crimes.ternational

Election newspaper distributed to Australian prisons and locked hospitals

Before last month’s New South Wales election, a community-based advocacy group, Justice Action, distributed a special election edition of their JUST US newspaper to 15,000 people in prisons and locked hospitals in Australia.

In 2007, the Australian High Court struck down a blanket ban on prison voting, and ruled that people serving a prison sentence of less than three years are eligible to vote behind bars. In 2007 and 2011, Justice Action successfully argued in Supreme Court cases that authorities should be required to give people in institutions access to outside publications to allow them to make an informed vote.

The recent newsletter outlined each political party’s position on a number of issues of particular significance to people in prisons and hospitals. “The publication ensures that specific information reaches those voters who are totally controlled by the laws formed in Parliament,” said Justice Action Coordinator Brett Collins.

Second Book in Series to Be Released on April 18, 2015

Dethroned: Dark Side of Money by d.E. Rogers

New York, NY (BlackNews.com) –  Dethroned: The Dark Side of Money II, the second book in the d. E. Rogers’ series, will be released on April 18, 2015. It is the highly anticipated follow-up to the bestselling novel The Dark Side of Money. Dethroned (ISBN: 9780970880871) takes off where part one ended with the Dean family fighting each other for power over The Gloria Dean Company, one of the largest fashion companies in the world.

Set in New York Citys fashion world, the sequel follows the dark side of the Dean Empire after Jaymee Dean has unseated her mother as the new Queen of fashion. Not wanting any part of a truce with her mother or sister, a war breaks out for control. But once Jaymee becomes a suspect in the death of a family member, Gloria Dean goes all out to get revenge. With the crown up for grabs everyone comes out to claim it. At the end, only one will be crown the Queen of fashion, but even that coronation might lead to death.

Dethroned is filled with colorful and dark characters, intrigue, murder, and a great storyline,” said Rogers. “The dramatic journey of the Dean family is similar to most families, except for the wealth and power they possess. Since the release of The Dark Side of Money, I’ve seen many shows like Power and Empire pop up with similar storylines, but in my opinion they both come up short in depth of their characters and plot. Dethroned is a thrill ride. Nothing compares to it.”

d. E. Rogers is the author of eight previous novels, White Lie, Color Line, Just Like Your Daddy, I Know She Didnt, Crossing Color Lines, Counterfeit Friends, Forgetting U Existed, and The Dark Side of Money. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and an MBA from Bethel College. Born in South Bend, Indiana, he currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
