CONSUMER ALERT: Madigan warns residents to remain alert for “Storm Chasers” after severe storms, floods in Chicago

Posted by Newsroom On April - 19 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS
Attorney General Investigators to Look Into Repair-Related Complaints

CHICAGO, IL – Following the severe storms and flooding that hit the Chicago area this week, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan urged area residents to be on alert for home repair con artists looking to exploit homeowners and local businesses needing repairs due to storm-related damage.

Madigan warned of home repair scammers who are known to move into affected areas to take advantage of people rushing to secure their property and make repairs. Madigan noted that these “storm chasers” try to catch people off guard to pressure them into making a quick, often expensive, decision. Madigan encouraged local residents and business owners to call the Consumer Fraud Hotline (1-800-386-5438) to report any suspicious activity. Investigators with her office will look into complaints received about area contractors.

“In the wake of the heavy rains and severe flooding that hit Chicago this week, many area residents and business owners have suffered significant property damage,” Madigan said. “I encourage people to use caution as they start the daunting cleanup process and to be on the lookout for potential scammers moving into the area to try to take advantage of the situation.”

Attorney General Madigan recommended verifying that contractors have the necessary insurance and required permits, and she encouraged taking extra caution before making any decisions to repair or rebuild damaged or destroyed property and avoid rushing into signing a contract or making a down payment.

Madigan offered these additional tips that can assist families and businesses from being duped by dishonest contractors:
  • Be wary of contractors who go door to door to offer repair services. Ask for recommendations from people you know and trust and, whenever possible, use established local contractors.
  • Call the Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline to check out a contractor and to learn if any complaints have been filed against a particular business.
  • Even if there is a need to act quickly, shop around for the best deal. Get written estimates from multiple contractors, and don’t be rushed into a deal.
  • Get all of the terms of a contract in writing, and obtain a copy of the signed contract. Never make full payment until all the work has been completed to your satisfaction. Never pay in cash.
  • Be aware that you have the right to cancel a contract within three business days if you signed it based on the contractor’s visit to your home.
  • In the case of disaster repair, you have an additional right to cancel. If your insurance carrier denies coverage, you have the right to cancel the contract within five days of when your insurance carrier denies your coverage.
  • Ask to see required state or local permits or licenses. Insurance adjusters and roofers must be licensed by state agencies. If the contractor does not have a required license, or if the name on the license doesn’t match the name on the contractor’s business card or truck, that should raise a red flag.
Attorney General Madigan reminded consumers that the Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act requires contractors to furnish customers with written contracts for any repair or remodeling work costing more than $1,000. A contract must be signed by both the customer and the contractor.

The law also requires contractors to carry at least minimum amounts of insurance for property damage, bodily injury and improper home repair. Contractors also must provide consumers with an informational pamphlet entitled “Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights.”

More information on consumer scams can be found at www.IllinoisAttorneyGeneral.gov. If consumers suspect storm chasers are attempting to scam residents in their area, Attorney General Madigan urged Chicago area residents and business owners to call the Consumer Fraud Hotline at 1-800-386-5438.

Simon: Comprehensive background checks a “must” for concealed carry law

Posted by Newsroom On April - 19 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Illinois Lt. Governor Sheila Simon issued the following statement regarding House Bill 997 sponsored by Rep. Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg). Earlier this month, Simon’s Firearms Working Group released a 10-point legislative checklist to help guide debate on pending legislation.

“I appreciate Rep. Phelps’ tireless work on crafting a constitutional law, and I thank him for talking with our Firearms Working Group as we worked to gather information from the many stakeholders involved in the concealed carry discussion. However, House Bill 997 as written today does not go far enough to guarantee public safety.

“HB 997, as currently written, relies too heavily on the FOID process to screen for an individual’s criminal history, history of domestic violence, and mental health background to determine whether that individual could pose a danger. We know that the FOID screening is underfunded, understaffed, and unable to provide for safety within a short 30 day timeframe. We must include comprehensive background checks in a concealed carry law in Illinois.

“The working group also learned that most teachers and administrators at grade schools, high schools and colleges agree that we should keep guns out of our schools. This is consistent with the gut reaction of horror that parents feel at each school shooting. Concealed carry firearms should be prohibited from school grounds.

“This legislation is a good start, but there is still work to do. I oppose HB997 in its current form and encourage legislators to continue negotiations. I am optimistic that we can reach a timely compromise.”

Both gun rights and violence prevention advocates urged the freshmen senators and representatives who comprised the Firearms Working Group to pass reasonable restrictions that balance the constitutional right to keep and bear arms with the responsibility to prevent violence.

Currently Illinois is the only state in the nation with a law that completely bans carrying concealed firearms. The law was declared unconstitutional in December by a three-member panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and Illinois now has until June to pass a law that permits people to carry concealed guns in public spaces.

Please visit www.ltgov.il.gov/guns for additional information about the Firearms Working Group and the legislative checklist.

Chicago communities will commemorate the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom with a March on City Hall for Peace With Justice

Chicago Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression Organizing Committee to Stop Police Crimes

Victims of police crimes and their families, and People from communities across the city will protest at People’s March for Peace With Justice at Federal Plaza, Adams and Dearborn at Noon, Wednesday, August 28, the 50th Anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They will march to City Hall and Rally at Daley Plaza to demand an elected Civilian Police Accountability Council in Chicago “because the people are fed up”, according to organizers of the event.

On Feb. 23, 2013, over 200 people – families of victims of police murder and torture – met at the University of Chicago at the 2nd People’s Hearing on Police Crimes.  These hearings have launched a campaign this Spring and Summer to get legislation passed by the City Council establishing an elected Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC).

The campaign will include a March on City Hall on August 28, 2013, the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington led by Dr. Martin Luther King.  CPAC will replace the current Police Board and the Independent Police Review Authority and have power to set the rules and regulations, appoint the Police Superintendant, and initiate prosecution of police officers charged with crimes against civilians[i].

In the last four years Chicago police have killed 63 people and shot another 153.  This violence was perpetrated against 172 African Americans and 27 Latinos[ii].  Not a single police officer has been charged or disciplined for any of these crimes by the Police Board or the State’s Attorney.

In these same four years 1,836 people have been murdered in Chicago[iii].   The police and the State’s Attorney seem powerless to do anything about this.  They have solved very few of these crimes and they often get the wrong person.  Police have beat false confessions from hundreds of Black and Latino men and sent them to prison for serious crimes, including murders that they did not commit.

The city admits that Rekia Boyd and Flint Farmer were murdered by the Police.  They admit that many police torture victims have wrongfully spent decades in prison.  Yet, not a single CPD officer has ever been charged with any of these crimes.  Most are still on the force, or are retired and collecting their pensions.

Thousands of years of unsolved mythology dramatically unveiled and decoded in sensational new book trilogy: The Sacred Quest, an epic story of myth, magic and reclaimed destiny

Posted by Newsroom On April - 19 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

Exciting, new, internationally acclaimed British author, A.K. Luthienne bursts onto the literary scene with sensational epic story of myth, magic and reclaimed destiny: The Sacred Quest.

Unsolved mythology as old as time is dramatically unveiled and solved within the story as a mysterious world of alchemy is unleashed.

Like J.R.R Tolkien’s epic Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Sacred Quest Trilogy dives deep into the age-old hidden Celtic mythologies and reveals, in a sensational manner, how they are connected to some of the world’s oldest mythologies through an incredible trail of information hidden within ancient writings and stories handed down through generations across the ages.

Where, for example, were the ancient cities of the Lords of the Light, Creator Gods known in Irish mythology as the Tuatha Dé Danann? This group of mighty men and women, alive around 8,000BC at the heart of the Mesolithic period, comprised of fire-priests and dream-walkers from the most ancient cultures across the globe. Why were their secret cities cited in the most ancient writings as the place where these master alchemists learnt their skills of magic? Why was their location kept secret for so long, together with their relation to some of the greatest ancient cultures and fabled lost empires?

How does this relate to the emerging sensational archaeological understandings of where the heart of the Neolithic world truly emerged? What were the Tuatha Dé Danann treasures really and how were they connected to the most ancient global mysteries of all?

When The Sacred Quest heroes embark upon a thrilling, fast-paced quest to reunite across time and uncover what lies at the end of a mysterious trail of ancient clues left across the ages, age-old mysteries within mythology are dissolved. The deadly enemy they must thwart to do so embodies the darkest fears of mankind, all of which become sensational revelations from the heart of mythology, legend and history itself as illusions across time are spectacularly shattered.

The Sacred Quest Trilogy consists of 3 books: The Quest Begins, Flight of the Eagle and Return of the Magus.

Trilogy synopsis

This mythic, sci-fi, fantasy takes us on an epic journey of magic. An unhappily married woman stumbles upon a dark secret in an ancient castle that unleashes her mystical lover and her deadliest enemy. This propels her onto a thrilling quest to fulfill her destiny, following a mysterious trail of clues left across the ages. Through a strange language, ceremonial magic and age-old mythologies, our two heroes must break free of a tyrannical enslaving system to reunite across time and space and finish what they once began. In this spectacular, timeless love story, two alchemists must unlock the magic behind creation to reclaim their destiny and change the fate of the world.

The remarkable story behind the story.

Many will read the story but how many will understand the inspirational, courageous journey of the woman who wrote it?

“I knew it was my destiny to write this unusual story the instant it appeared to me at the same time as an unusual language seven years ago, late one night in a moment of deep despair,” says Luthienne.

“The story began to unfold along with the intriguing alchemy at the heart of it, leading me on a remarkable, rollercoaster seven year journey as if decoding a mysterious tale that the story itself was trying to show me. I have had to face and transform my own extreme fear to be able to finally write it.”

Early reviews for the trilogy have been outstanding:

“I’m thinking of some of the really great, memorable books that I’ve read: everything from Murakami to Harry Potter to classics like The Alchemist. Well, this is one of those stories. Really something special and totally unique,” says P. Gerrard.

“What a breathtaking and extraordinary journey this trilogy takes you on, touching and activating ones soul at every turn of a page. It’s a life-changing read for all,” says D. Ama Day, CEO Positive TV.

“Truly breathtaking and mesmerizing, this supremely singular work just oozes originality. Profoundly moving, I would certainly single this out as something uniquely exceptional,” says L. Fountain, UK.

‘These are the kind of books one only dreams about. I would suggest this story for everyone to read and watch their dreams unfold,” says M. A. Moses, USA.

India’s The Sunday Guardian says this of A. K. Luthienne’s writing, “Fast-paced with a remarkable storyline that encourages us to follow our heart and destiny, it is a must read.”

Raoul legislation cracks down on violent flash mobs

Posted by Newsroom On April - 19 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Senator Kwame Raoul (D-13th) has introduced legislation cracking down on violent “flash mobs” and requiring internet service providers (ISPs) to cooperate with law enforcement to help track down instigators. In recent incidents in Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and in the Loop, large groups of young people shoplifted from retailers and assaulted and robbed passersby. Social networking websites such as Twitter allowed them to coordinate their efforts.

“The ability to coordinate a mob action online gives criminals two key advantages: surprise and large numbers,” Raoul said. “State law can support police efforts by helping them use one of the criminals’ tools — social media — against them.”

Senate Bill 1005 would require ISPs to provide identifying information, including the location from which a tweet or other message was sent, to law enforcement once they show probable cause to believe a mob action has been or is being facilitated via the Internet. ISPs could be fined for failure to comply.

Raoul’s measure also would allow a judge to impose an extended sentence for offenses related to criminal mob activity if the perpetrator used electronic communications to organize the mob.

“Criminal flash mobs discourage tourism and create an environment of fear and uncertainty for businesses,” said Marc Gordon, president of the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association. “Our hotel members and their guests will sleep easier knowing these criminal acts can be detected and deterred in the planning stage.”

47-year-old woman teaches how “to get your sexy back”

Posted by Newsroom On April - 19 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

Nationwide (BlackNews.com) — According to statistics, not only are black women least likely to get married, but also suffer the brunt of the obesity crisis in America, with 4 out of 5 having a body mass index above the level defined as obese. Dawn Ali, a 47 year old African American mother, teacher, coach, speaker, website personality, author, chef, internet marketer and website administrator decided to face this epidemic head on. Not only did she lose 70 pounds and improve her own appearance and health, but she also created “Get Your Sexy Back” Live Online Classes & Coaching at http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ulLjTWqwn6Mpe-3nf1kT8Y4HZ-BbJiS 4bgfmw310nafaT0T4dw2Ibnzir6t4KIX9C35jYktLVLtydfU2u95r8JAjjGvobJndXcEUxdOgsk=, to help women of all ages, take control of their lives.

About Dawn Ali
One morning, Dawn woke up and noticed her ankles were swollen and were retaining fluid. For the next three years, she read everything she could get her hands on about health, nutrition, superfoods and weight loss. She watched perhaps more than 1,000 videos related to those subjects, took online courses, including raw food vegan, and vegan culinary. She went from having high blood pressure to normal blood pressure, from taking medication for asthma, arthritis, and sleep, to taking no medication at all (not even over the counter meds). After losing 70 pounds she feels she got her sexy back! Now, at almost 48 years old, she believes she looks and feels like she did when she was 21.

People around her took notice, and started asking her to cook and cater for them, to teach them, to coach and give them info on detoxing their bodies, help with losing weight, and the word about her started spreading like wild-fire. She even started having classes in her home. That is how the “Getting Your Sexy Back” Live Online Classes & Coaching sessions were born.

About Get Your Sexy Back
Although “Getting Your Sexy Back” Classes & Coaching can benefit anyone, male or female of any age. It was created specifically for women in their mid 30’s – mid 50’s. Women who have teenage and young adult children, who are perhaps single moms, divorced or in bad marriages. In many cases, these women have unknowingly neglected themselves, and not realized it until after the fact. They have been nurturing their children, husbands and careers, spending more time taking care of others more than themselves. Suddenly, they realized they not only didn’t like what they saw in the mirror, but lacked energy, started to have health issues, taking both over the counter and prescription medication to sleep, to wake up, to cope, to deal, for pain, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. These women are everywhere, and are shouting inside of themselves: “I WANT MY SEXY BACK!” “I WANT MY HEALTH BACK!” “I WANT MY LIFE BACK!” Dawn Ali was one of those women.

The “Get Your Sexy Back Live Online Class” includes every single thing she did, did not do, and ate during her journey… everything from A – Z! Dawn will take you by the hand and walk you through step by step, and prevent you from going through the school of weight loss hard knocks, or take you out of it, if you are presently there. Dawn will also coach you throughout your weight loss process.

Who Can Benefit From “Get Your Sexy Back Healthy Live Online Class”? Those Who:

Getting Started with Your Web Site

Soap Box Rants

By Pamela Bratcher-McMillan
President, Chair & CEO, of PETAL et al.

People often ask me, “How do I get started with a website?” I respond by asking, “Who is the website for and where is your content?” Many people have a desire to have a website, however,  some have no idea what they need one for.

Keep in mind that when you set up a site, it usually serves a purpose. It can be one of which to inform, educate or sell something. I’m sure there are other things it can be used for, but these are usually the main topics. Before getting started with your website, you should ask yourself “What audience do I want to reach?” Are they 30-40 somethings, high school dropouts, college professors, stay at home moms, athletes, musicians, doctors, actors, lawyers or overall general population. Is your site attractive to the hip, conservative, kids, grandparents, parents, women, men or siblings? No matter what, you should have an idea as to whom you’re talking to and who will be attracted to your site and content posted.

After you have decided who they are and what you want to share with your audience, start planning it on paper by creating a site map detailing what will be on each page and the hierarchy of the website. For example, a page titled “Dessert Recipes” could have several pages under it (i.e. Pound Cake and Cherry Pie.) They both fall under Dessert Recipes.” The main page that Dessert Recipes and Salads fall under could be your home page. It might have the title “Favorite American Recipes.”

After pulling all the information together, you can begin to add content to your site. I would start by coming up with an American theme since they are American recipes. That might include the colors from the U.S. flag or favorite national monuments used as motifs throughout the site.

Always use nice photographs that are sharp in contrast and rich in color. A bad photograph can ruin a great design. Use fonts that fit the theme. Do a search for American fonts, US logos, etc. and look at the fonts. Do any of them make you think about America or Recipes? If so, then that would probably be a good font for headings and sub-headings on the site. Text that viewers will be reading should be standard text. Don’t get too fancy with rows of text. Keep it “reader friendly” – simple and easy on the eyes.

If you’re not  a good writer, write what you can, and have a professional reviewer to edit it for you. Remember, once it’s out on the web, it is live and a reflection of you so always do a spell and grammar check before posting it!

And always provide a contact page on your site for visitors in case they have questions or comments.
