Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady condemns reports of Governor’s choice to head the Department of Agriculture, labeling it another “Quinn Pro Quo”

Posted by Admin On February - 16 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Brady said 6 of 12 lame duck House Democrats who voted for tax hike now on public payroll

CHICAGO, IL  – Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady condemned reports that Governor Pat Quinn was going to name former State Representative Bob Flider (D – Mount Zion) as Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

“This is just another ‘Quinn Pro Quo,’” said Brady. “Governor Quinn and his Democratic pals thought they could wait a year for no one to remember Bob Flider’s lame duck, late night flip-flop on Pat Quinn’s 66% tax hike but our state’s economy is still suffering the consequences of Flip Flop Flider’s ‘Quinncidence.’”

“Agriculture is one of our state’s most important industries. It’s an insult to every Illinois farmer who has to pay taxes that the Governor would appoint an Agriculture Director who would oppose a proposed tax hike when he was running for re-election but then cast the deciding vote for an even larger tax hike just a few months later,” said Brady. “What key agriculture issues will Flider flip-flop on for political expediency?”

During his unsuccessful 2010 re-election campaign, Flider told the news media and even issued a press release stating his opposition to Quinn’s proposed income tax hike. However, Flider voted in favor of an even larger income tax hike in his final day in office. The 66% income tax hike passed in the Illinois House of Representatives by one vote, with every Republican member opposing it.

Counting Flider’s appointment, six of the twelve lame duck Democratic House members who voted for Quinn’s tax hike have received public payroll jobs, including former State Rep. Careen Gordon, who like Flider, flip-flopped on the tax hike issue following her defeat for re-election in 2010.

Lt. Governor Simon welcomes Vice President of China to Quad Cities

MOLINE, IL – Illinois Lt. Governor Sheila Simon welcomed the man expected to be the next president of China to Moline today and pledged to strengthen business and economic ties between Illinois and China. The red carpet ceremony for Vice President Xi Jinping at the Quad City International Airport marked the first meeting between top Illinois leaders and a Chinese delegation since Governor Pat Quinn led a trade mission to China in September.

 Xi is expected to be confirmed as China’s president later this year, and the trip introduced him to the Midwest and the rest of the United States. He visited the White House on Tuesday, and continued his tour this evening with a stops in Des Moines and Muscatine, Iowa, where he spent time in 1985 studying advanced hog raising and spent two nights with a local family. He stops in California later this week.

 “Illinois leads the Midwest in exports and foreign investment, and we want to build on these successes to grow our economy,” Simon said. “Building a trade relationship with China will help keep Illinoisans employed here at home.”

After Canada and Mexico, China is the state’s third-leading export market. China purchased about $3.9 billion in machinery, electronics, agricultural products and other goods from Illinois last year, a more than 22 percent increase from 2010, according to the Office of Trade and Investment. During the State of the State Address earlier this month, Governor Quinn announced the creation of an Export Advisory Council. It will advise the governor’s office on how to double the state’s exports within two years.

Simon was joined on the red carpet by Secretary of State Jesse White, State Senator Mike Jacobs (D-Moline), State Representative Patrick Verschoore (D-Rock Island), Moline Mayor Pro Tem Scott Raes and Yang Guoqiang, the Consulate General of China in Chicago.

Marc Mauer to testify before U.S. Sentencing Commission today on federal sentencing options

Posted by Admin On February - 16 - 2012 1 COMMENT

Marc Mauer, Executive Director of the Sentencing Project, will testify today at a hearing of the U.S. Sentencing Commission on federal sentencing options following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2005 decision in Booker v. United States.

The Booker decision changed the federal sentencing guidelines from a mandatory system to an advisory one, thus granting greater discretion to federal judges. Today’s hearing has been called to assess changes in sentencing since that decision and implications for policy development.

Mauer’s testimony will focus on issues of racial disparity in federal sentencing, and will raise the following issues:

• That there is no single cause of racial disparity in sentencing outcomes, and we need
to examine how decisionmaking at each stage of the court process affects ultimate
outcomes.
•  Enhanced guidelines discretion for judges now makes disparities in the imposition
of mandatory penalties even more significant, a development which adversely affects black males.
•  Responses to disparity in sentencing can best be addressed by expanding use of
the “safety valve” in many drug cases and by creating a broader array of non-prison sentencing options.

The Better Business Bureau advises: Reduce the emotional price tag on funerals by planning them in advance

Posted by Admin On February - 16 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

CHICAGO, IL – At an average cost of $7,000, funerals are one of the more expensive purchases made by consumers. During an emotionally-charged time it can be easy to spend more than might be necessary. The Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and northern Illinois (BBB) recommends the following advice for navigating the funeral process.

Most funeral providers offer a variety of package plans that include products and services most commonly sold. However, it’s important to remember that no package is obligatory and it’s important to take the time, even though it may be constricted, to find the individual products and services you prefer. The “Funeral Rule,” enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, requires funeral directors to give you itemized prices in person and, if asked, over the phone.

“Arranging a funeral often becomes an economic and emotional burden on the surviving relatives,” said Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and northern Illinois. “This makes it imperative that people get all details in writing and obtain more than one estimate before signing on the dotted line.”

The BBB has the following advice for those planning a funeral:

  • You have the right to choose the funeral goods and services that you want (with some exceptions);
  • If state or local law requires you to buy any particular item, the funeral provider must disclose it on the price list, with a reference to the specific law;
  • The funeral provider may not refuse, or charge a fee, to handle a casket you bought elsewhere;
  • A funeral provider who offers cremations must make alternative urns available.

“Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask questions and read contracts before you sign,” notes Bernas. “If you feel as if you are being pressured into buying something you do not want or need, ask to speak to a different funeral director or go to a different funeral home.”

One way to reduce stress during a time of grief is pre-planning. Learning the funerary preferences of loved ones ahead of time may help families create a budget and a plan they can reference in the future.

Woman becomes homeless on purpose to overcome fear of failure

Posted by Admin On February - 16 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Hollywood, FL (BlackNews.com) — It was a sad time in the life of 32-year-old Hollywood, Florida resident Te-Erika Patterson. She had just lost both of her jobs, the use of her car had been taken away and under the stress of her financial woes, she dropped out of graduate school.

What is a woman to do when her life seems to be taking a turn for the worse? This woman decided to listen to the still voice in the back of her mind that whispered, “Let it go.” On April 11, 2011, Patterson gave away everything that she owned and became homeless on purpose to face her fear of failure.

“I could have fought to maintain my lifestyle by taking any job or latching on to the first man who offered me help, but instead I decided to turn this problem into a project and see where it would lead,” Patterson explained.

Patterson is the publisher of MySavvySisters.Com, an empowerment blog for women. Patterson began MySavvySisters.Com to help other women learn how to transition smoothly into the next level of their lives. She transformed her dire situation into The Rebuild Your Life Project which has empowered thousands of readers and viewers who have followed her four month journey on YouTube.

She recorded her entire journey in videos she posted daily on YouTube. From the moment she gave everything away, as she navigated through her goals which included organizing a job fair for homeless women and raising money for a rental assistance grant for a woman in need, all the way to her final day at the homeless shelter where she found refuge throughout the four months she lived without permanent shelter are all available on video through YouTube for women to browse and be inspired.

Patterson believes loss is a vital part of the cycle of success and it is important to embrace it with poise. During her journey she blogged about her experiences and made videos investigating the mental survival skills women need to survive a life on the streets if their worst fear of homelessness came true. She battled through securing a place to sleep, finding medical help, learning how to earn money without a job, rape, jail time and anxiety and panic attacks, all while advocating for women by trying to help them to get jobs.

“I’ve noticed that one of the things that hold women back from chasing a dream is a fear of failure. I faced my fear and taught the lessons on how to survive the most extreme failure,”Patterson explained. “Now, no woman has to fear failure ever again because they saw me make it through and after watching my videos they will know just what to do if it ever happened to them. Every woman can now be free to go, to do and to be, knowing that no matter what, they can always rebuild their lives.”

Patterson, who moved up from homelessness by securing a job as a waitress at Denny’s, has taken steps to advance the work she began during The Rebuild Your Life Project by asking corporations to partner with The Rebuild Your Life Project to employment opportunities to the communities that have fueled their success. Patterson’s partnership with Denny’s Restaurant resulted in more than 100 unemployed South Floridians being interviewed on the spot in a mass hiring event sponsored by the international corporation.
