Windy City Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications for potential homeowners
Windy City Habitat for Humanity is holding Homebuyer Information Meetings for people interested in becoming Habitat homeowners. The organization anticipates it will build 8 houses next year.
“We’re asking the community to help us spread the word that we are accepting applications from those in need of safe, decent housing,†explains Jennifer Parks, executive director of Windy City Habitat for Humanity. The three criteria used in the application process are housing need, ability to pay and willingness to partner.
To qualify for a Habitat for Humanity home, applicants must be living in substandard housing and have a stable income between 40 and 65 percent of the area median income for Cook County. The range for this area is between $29,920 and $48,620 for a family of four.Â
To become a Habitat for Humanity homeowner, families must agree to help build their own house, perform a minimum of 350 hours of sweat equity and take classes as part of their transition from renters to owners. These classes include credit counseling and home maintenance.Â
When the home is completed, the family receives a “hand up, not a “hand out†in the form of a no profit, zero interest mortgage.
“This is not a give-away program,†explains Jennifer. “Our families pay approximately $650 per month, which includes homeowners insurance, property taxes and the principle payment that supports the building of future Habitat homes.â€
Families interested in Habitat home ownership can attend one of four information sessions on Jan. 19, Feb. 16, March 15, or Apr. 19 at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, 1335 W. 115th St between 6:30 and 8:00 p.m.
