State’s Attorney Alvarez Partnering With Verizon Wireless and Wings Domestic Violence Organization to Launch “Wish List” Collection for Victims

Community members can drop off donations at State’s Attorney Community Justice Centers

In an effort to collect much needed items for victims of domestic violence, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez is partnering with Verizon Wireless and the WINGS domestic violence organization for a “Wish List” donation drive which will be conducted throughout October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

State’s Attorney Alvarez is encouraging anyone interested in providing toiletries, bedding, children’s items, and other essentials to visit drop off points at any of the State’s Attorney’s Community Justice Centers which are located on Chicago’s North, South, and West Sides as well as in west suburban Oak Park. Charitable citizens can also drop donations at the Chicago Verizon Destination Store located at 840 N. Michigan Avenue.

The drive is being conducted as part of Verizon’s Hope Line program, which collects no-longer-used wireless devices year-round to support domestic violence prevention efforts. All items obtained through the donation drive will go to support WINGS, a domestic violence prevention organization dedicated to providing housing and services to victims of domestic violence. The WINGS organization operates a 45-bed family-style shelter in the city’s northwest suburbs and will be opening the first new domestic violence shelter in Chicago in over a decade.

State’s Attorney Alvarez has made the investigation and prosecution of domestic violence a top priority, with a specialized focus on providing assistance for the victims of this horrific crime.

“The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office is very proud to be a part of this important public-private partnership and I encourage anyone who is able to participate in this collection effort to lend a helping hand,” Alvarez said.

“Women and children impacted by domestic violence are some of our most vulnerable victims who often lack basic provisions to support their families during an extremely difficult time in their lives. This collection drive is a very meaningful way for all of us to make a contribution to help these special victims.”

Items being collected include:

 Toiletries: deodorant, conditioner, shampoo, contact lens solution, hairbrushes, combs, body wash, mouthwash and hand sanitizer.
