Senator Collins honored with PUSH Excel’s King-Johnson Dream-Makers Award
CHICAGO, IL – Illinois State Senator Jacqueline Y. Collins (D-Chicago 16th) was honored with a Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Lyndon B. Johnson Dream-Makers Award at the 24th Annual PUSH Excel King Scholarship Breakfast. The “Faith in Politics: Game Changer†recognition acknowledged Collins’ work in addressing, focusing attention and showing accountability in efforts to eradicate poverty.
“It is an honor to hold a position of trust from which I am able to oppose injustice and advocate for the ‘least of these,’†said Collins, who serves on the Governor’s Commission on the Elimination of Poverty. “The collaboration between Dr. King and President Johnson to pass civil rights legislation and launch the War on Poverty remains an example I look to as I work with churches, non-profits and others to further the dream of equal opportunity.â€
During her decade of service in the Illinois Senate, Collins has fought against foreclosure, mortgage scams, unfair lending practices, abuse and neglect in nursing homes, the exploitation of children and other threats to economic and social justice.
