A recap of Chicago GOP activities:

— In 2013, the Chicago Republican Party ran an “American Idol”-style campaign to recruit candidates. 150 people responded. After the vetting process, the petition process, and various legal battles, nine candidates made it onto the ballot for the 2014 election.

— The hoped-for effect is to raise the Republican vote in Chicago by 5%, from 18% to 23%. If successful, it would put competitive statewide races over the 20% threshhold, and Republicans will win Illinois.

— The Chicago GOP and the ward organizations raised and spent nearly $250,000 on the effort.

— All but one of the recruits were first-time candidates. Despite this fact, four of them won the endorsement of the Chicago Tribune.

— The questions for the night:

Will the Chicago GOP get over the 20% threshhold in the city?

Will Chicago Republicans be responsible for putting Bruce Rauner over the top?

Will a group of first-time candidates in heavily Democratic Chicago turn Illinois red?
