Muslim American Artists: Reshaping the Narrative A Panel Discussion – Monday, March 9th at 7 p.m.
Move over Muslim boogeyman, the artists are gonna put you out of business!
As part of Silk Road Rising’s ongoing commitment to reclaiming, dissecting, and subverting representation, we have assembled a panel of five outstanding Chicago-based artists to discuss their work and where it fits against the broader backdrop of American culture, Muslim identity, world events, and the communities from which they hail.
These artists have not been content simply sitting around, waiting to condemn the next atrocity from ISIS; instead, they’ve been busy Creating While Muslim (that is “Muslim” as each defines “Muslim”). CWM – it’s a beautiful thing to watch!
Meet the artists: the comedian, Azhar Usman; the musician, Marwan Kamel; the filmmaker, Rashid Ghazi; the writer, Nura Maznavi; and the playwright, Rohina Malik. The panel will be moderated by Silk Road Rising’s founding artistic director Jamil Khoury.
By coming together to discuss their identities as professional artists and Muslim Americans, the panelists will provide us insights that are sorely lacking in the public sphere.
The panel is being produced by Silk Road Rising in association with Chicago Dramatists.
