CHICAGO , IL -  U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution grants same-sex couples the right to marry nationwide:

“As Americans, we believe in human rights, civil rights and dignity. Today’s ruling recognizes that our gay friends, family members, and neighbors are deserving of the same right to commit to the one they love.”

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle called it “a proud day for our nation and an incredible victory for all those who have fought so hard for this recognition over the years. As a history teacher by profession, I applaud this latest milestone in our nation’s long struggle to ensure civil rights for all citizens, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or immigration status. For too long in this country, same-sex couples were denied equal protection under the law.

“All couples who are in loving, committed relationships should have the right to marry and be treated equally in the eyes of the law, regardless of the state they live in. With today’s Supreme Court decision, this legal discrimination comes to an end. Today, we are all equal under the law.”
