CHICAGO, IL – Secretary of State Jesse White, President of the Chicago Teachers Union Karen Lewis, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Father Michael Pfleger led a large coalition of community leaders and advocates for working families joining Democrat Juliana Stratton in her campaign to oust Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Springfield ally, State Representative Ken Dunkin.
“Ken Dunkin turned his back on our families and our neighborhoods when he sided with Republican Governor Bruce Rauner,” Stratton said. “He’s decided to stand with his million-dollar campaign donors instead of our famlies. I’m standing with local leaders who speak up for our families. We’re here because we stand with the elderly woman I met who can’t afford her prescription drugs and has been cutting her
medication in half to make it last, and the grandmother I spoke to who had just gotten a call saying her granddaughter was no longer eligible for day care because Ken Dunkin decided to go along with Bruce Rauner’s devastating cuts to child care assistance. They can’t afford the Dunkin-Rauner agenda.” Stratton stood with White, Lewis, Preckwinkle and Pfleger, along with members of AFSCME Council 31,
members of SEIU Healthcare, Aldermen Brian Hopkins (2nd), Pat Dowell (3rd), Leslie Hairston (5th), Roderick Sawyer (6th), Michelle Harris (8th) and Brendan Reilly (42nd) at an endorsement rally Thursday at the Brite New Mind Day Care Center in Chicago.
Dunkin was the only Democrat to who sided with Republicans to allow Rauner to kick thousands of poor children off a program that allowed struggling, working parents to afford child care. Dunkin said the plan to kick children off the program was a “tremendous win.” Earlier this week, Dunkin received a $500,000 donation – the largest political contribution in state history – from a right–wing group run by Rauner’s allies. Rauner recently gave $1.8 million to the group’s leader in order to provide political support his Springfield allies.
“Ken Dunkin has chosen to stand with the Republicans and against our families,” White said.” He has failed to represent his constituents and has turned his back on the core values of the Democratic Party. Now, with so much at stake, we can’t let Ken Dunkin and the Republicans continue to play games with the services our families depend on.”
“Unfortunately, Ken Dunkin has put the interests of millionaires and billionaires ahead of the needs of our children and families,” Lewis said. “Representative Dunkin stood with Governor Rauner in voting against a measure that would have required the very wealthy to pay their fair share, a plan that would have generated $1 billion every year for our schools at a time when they desperately need it. The people of the 5th District can no longer afford for their representative to staunchly support Bruce Rauner.”
