ICYMI: Champaign News-Gazette Calls State Budget “Sorry Spectacleâ€
Frerichs’ Hometown Paper Criticizes Budget Frerichs Supported
This week the Champaign News-Gazette penned an editorial outlining the problems with both the process and policy of this year’s state budget. The budget, supported and defended by Mike Frerichs, has many flaws as outlined in some of the excerpts below:
“Illinois legislators are running for re-election and running from tough decisions.”
“Risk-averse legislators staggered out of Springfield over the weekend, having passed a budget plan that calls for spending $35.7 billion but leaving open the question of how it will be funded.â€
“Times may be hard, but legislators decided the state has ample resources to look out for themselves and their special constituents.
Legislators voted to start paying themselves again for 12 furlough days — that’s worth another $3,100 each.â€
“House and Senate Democrats simply refused to support the tax hike at a time when voters could hold them accountable for their actions.
So the budget remains mired in confusion and doubt that only the forthcoming election can clarify.â€
