Petition Calls for the Immediate Resignation of State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez
14 months ago Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke fired 16 rounds into Laquan McDonald, an unarmed Black teenager presenting no risk to anyone. Despite having dashcam evidence of the murder, McCarthy’s press office issued a false statement claiming that McDonald lunged at police with a knife. This isn’t the first time Chicago’s police superintendent has demonstrated a lack of concern for Black lives. McCarthy also refused, for more than three years, to take disciplinary action against Dante Servin, the white police officer who murdered 22-year-old Rekia Boyd in 2012.
State’s Attorney Alvarez has a reputation for protecting criminal police officers and yet she is the attorney presiding over Laquan McDonald’s case. For over a year, Attorney Alvarez has known about the brutal murder of Laquan McDonald, and yet no actions have been taken to hold violent police officer Jason Van Dyke accountable.
We are calling on you to ensure a fair and just judicial process for Chicago residents by doing the following:
