CHICAGO, IL –  On December 21st we honor the hundreds of Chicagoans who fell to violence in 2013. We will gather Saturday, December 21st, 6 p.m., at 1610 W. Howard St., and raise a light banner, before embarking on a brief neighborhood march, which will include imagery created by community members to honor the fallen. Speakers will include slam poet Brenda Mathews, and Mariame Kaba, Director of Project NIA.
We are asking Chicagoans to join us, and to take a moment to imagine a city that isn’t plagued by violence.
Unlike our mayor, we do not believe that incarcerating more of our neighbors, for greater lengths of time, will undo the damage of austerity, or heal the wounds of poverty that have led to so much violence. We believe that the solutions that will heal our communities will come from within, and that our collective compassion and creativity are more powerful than any force that seeks to oppress us.
Background: Last year, the original Wisconsin chapter of the Overpass Light Brigade traveled to Chicago to attend a vigil for Chicagoans who fell to violence in 2012. That event, organized by Occupy Rogers Park, was known as “For the Fallen: The 500 Stars Project.” This year, we hope to come together with neighbors from around the city to imagine a world where these vigils are no longer necessary. We believe that peace is possible, but that it will require creation, rather than destruction.
