Mega-Rally for immigrant dignity and respect takes place tomorrow in Downtown Chicago
(From Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights)
Editor’s Note: Due to the government shutdown, tomorrow’s 3 P.M. rally for immigrant dignity and respect has been moved to Daley Plaza at 50 W Washington.
All other details of the march are the same. Tomorrow’s action still begins at Teamster City at 12 P.M. The rally will now end at Daley Plaza instead of Federal Plaza.
Thousands of people across the country continue to take bold action across the country this month to stop deportations and demand dignity and respect for immigrants.
On Tuesday, over 200 people demanding House Republicans get to work on immigration reform were arrested in Washington, D.C. including ICIRR’s Lawrence Benito and Joshua Hoyt. Also arrested were Illinois immigration champions Congressman Luis Gutierrez and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.
The action continues on Saturday to cap off this week of action for immigrant dignity and respect.
The mega-march for immigrant dignity and respect will be held tomorrow in downtown Chicago.
Following Tuesday’s arrests, Illinois Latino elected officials on Wednesday slammed the “anti-Latino” Rep. Peter Roskam and demanded that he move House leaders to give us a vote on immigration reform.
Yesterday, a Chicago Sun-Times Editorial bluntly called out House Republicans to pass immigration reform and stop deportations.
With fast-growing immigrant communities in many key House districts like that of deputy whip Peter Roskam, Republicans ignore immigration reform at their own political peril. House Republicans need to remember November, when Democrats won an overwhelming majority of immigrant voters across the nation.
Worse still, everyday that House Republicans continue to delay immigration reform, 1100 people are deported. Thousands of families are torn apart while millions of immigrants desperately wait for the dignity and respect that every American should enjoy.
The start of the march begins Saturday at noon, at 300 S Ashland.
Let’s make sure House Republicans can’t continue to ignore the dignity of 11 million people!
P.S. If you can’t make it tomorrow, please add your voice to this automatic Thunderclap action, happening during the mega-rally.
