Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez is offering tips to help keep children safe while enjoying the time-honored tradition of trick or treating this year. The office has compiled a list of safety precautions to aid parents and ensure a healthy and Happy Halloween for everyone.

· Choose bright costumes, and have children carry flashlights or glow sticks.

· Plan a trick-or-treating route in familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets.

· Young children should always trick-or-treat with an adult and no one should ever trick-or-treat alone.

· Do not allow children to eat candy until it has been inspected by a trustworthy adult, and never allow children to eat homemade treats or unpackaged foods.

· Never let your children enter a home unless you are with them.

· Be sure to tell children not to approach any vehicle unless you are with them.

· Make sure your children have a way to stay in contact with you and teach them how to call 911.

Trick or treating is being held at various times throughout Cook County on Thursday, October 31st. Parents are encouraged to take their children out early to take advantage of daylight hours. Many communities suggest only taking children to houses with illuminated outside lights, in order to respect the privacy of homeowners and for the safety of the children.
