National Urban League Mourns the Passing of Alma Arrington Brown

There are few members of our Urban League family who have made a greater impact, or whose loss will be felt more deeply than Alma Arrington Brown, who passed away last week at the age of 76.

Alma was lifelong Urban Leaguer who attended Camp Atwater, the summer camp owned and operated by the Urban League of Springfield, Massachusetts. She and her husband, the late DNC Chair and Commerce Secretary Ron Brown, were passionate champions of the Urban League Movement throughout their lives.

During her nearly 20 years of service on our Board of Trustees, Alma was an active, passionate advocate for the league’s agenda and governance. In 2010, we honored her at our New York Equal Opportunity Day Dinner with our Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition to her service to the National Urban League, Alma was a national leader in public and community service. She was a program specialist with the National Black Child Development Institute, program director of the National Council of Negro Women and Director of the Office of International Business. She hosted her own public affairs show on Washington’s WKYS-FM and was active in the United Negro College Fund and the Girl Scouts of America.

We join Alma’s family and the entire country in mourning her loss.
