Baltimore, MD – The NAACP national office joins the Virginia State Conference of the NAACP and the NAACP Virginia State Conference Youth & College Division (VaYCD NAACP)  in supporting Virginia Governor McAuliffe in his call for an immediate investigation into the beating of Martese Johnson, 20, a University of Virginia student and a member of the UVA Honor Committee and the Alliance.

Martese Johnson, a third year student at the University of Virginia, was “flung to the ground” by Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control agents outside Trinity Irish Pub last Wednesday, March 18th. Mr. Johnson was charged with public swearing/intoxication and obstructing justice, according to court records.  The NAACP is deeply disturbed by the incident at the University of Virginia that left an unarmed young man, who did not appear to be resisting arrest, bloodied and bruised by the hands of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control agents.
