NAACP Applauds Appointment of New NYPD Inspector General

NAACP’s Statement on Appointment

Washington, DC – New York City has appointed its first inspector general for the New York Police Department. Philip Eure, who is currently head of the District of Columbia Office of Police Complaints, will be responsible for ensuring that the city’s police department follows the law when it comes to controversial tactics like stop-and-frisk.

“After decades of advocacy, the NAACP is pleased to know that there will be an inspector general charged with overseeing the nation’s largest police force,” said Hazel N. Dukes, the President of the NAACP New York State Conference. “We look forward to working with Mr. Eure to increase police accountability and improve community police relations, both of which are key components to increasing public safety for every community in our great city.”
