Rahm will face Jesus “Chuy” Garcia in the April 7th runoff election

Although Mayor Rahm Emanuel received 46% of the vote in the 2015 mayoral election February 24th – way ahead of any of his four challengers – he failed to get the 50 + one votes needed to save himself from a runoff election in April.

Emanuel’s multimillion dollar political warchest spent millions in advertising, had the support of President Barack Obama and the endorsements of every major newspaper in the city, but it was not enough to give him a straight ticket back to the 5th Floor of City Hall or to avoid a runoff.

With 98.6% of precincts reporting, Emanuel received 208,305 votes, 45.4%; Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, 155,545, 33.9 %; Dr. Willie Wilson, 48,660, 10.6 %; Bob Fioretti, 33,911, 7.4%; and Bill “Dock” Walls, 12, 692, 2.8%.

In addition to that, 19 aldermanic races were forced into a runoff. Those runoffs are in the 2nd, 7th, 10th, 11th, 15th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 21st, 24th, 29th, 31st, 33rd, 36th, 37th, 41st, 43rd, 45th,  and 46th.
