A 31-year old man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for using a sawed off shotgun to shoot and injure two Stone Park police officers, leaving one of the officers permanently disfigured in 2010, according to the office of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

Rashaun Carlisle, of Melrose Park was sentenced to the 60 year prison term by Cook County Judge Carol Kipperman during a court hearing today at the Maywood Courthouse. Carlisle was convicted by a jury in February of five counts of Attempt Murder of a Police Officer.

According to prosecutors, on May 8th, 2010 at approximately 2:30 a.m. the defendant was involved in a physical altercation with rival gang members in the parking lot of a liquor store located in the 1600 block of north Mannheim Road in Stone Park. After the altercation the defendant went home and retrieved a double barrel sawed off shotgun from his closet.

Carlisle loaded the shotgun with 2 shells and placed two additional shells in his coat pocket. He then walked back to the scene of the original altercation, arriving at approximately 3:00 a.m. By the time the defendant returned to the parking lot, members of the Stone Park police department had cleared the parking lot of all but one civilian.

According to prosecutors, the parking lot was occupied by two Stone Park squad cars as well as three Stone Park police officers. The defendant positioned himself in the middle of Mannheim Road and fired two shots directly at the police officers. One of the officers was struck in the face and neck and is permanently disfigured as a result of the shooting. A second officer, who was shot in the chest during the incident, has since recovered.

Carlisle fled but was apprehended a short time later. The shotgun and one live shell were recovered by assisting officers.

State’s Attorney Alvarez thanked Assistant State’s Attorneys Joseph Keating and Russell Baker for their work on the case. She also thanked the Stone Park police department for their assistance.
