Love, Politics and Women – SMASH Opens September 5

EVANSTON, IL – Piccolo Theatre’s SMASH previews this weekend, and opens to the press on Friday, September 5!  Though wedding love and politics is not often seen on the Piccolo stage, Jeffrey Hatcher’s script dazzles with high-style British comedy staying true to Piccolo’s mission to make people laugh.

On the surface, SMASH could be likened to the work of Noel Coward, or Oscar Wilde – just another jolly good, witty warhorse tramped out for laughs. But at the heart of this Shavian pro-socialist comedy is a story about the choices people make and how they make them when what they believe is challenged.  The relevance of tradition as it is eclipsed by revolution is still a theme in today’s society, especially for women. Though no longer conditioned to be wives and mothers only, it is the women of SMASH who break the norms of education, politics, and love by teaching the men in their lives that while they may want to change the world, it is love that changes them.

SMASH previews August 29 – 31, Friday & Saturday at 8PM, and Sunday at 3PM. Press opening is Friday, September 5 at 8PM with a free reception to follow. Performances run September 5 – October 11; all performances are Friday and Saturday at 8PM, and Sunday at 3PM.
