Urges U.S. to Push Back as Iranian Regime and Revolutionary Guard Escalate Threatening Behavior in Middle East and Beyond

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) issued the following statement after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly arrested Siamak Namazi, a 40-year-old, Dubai-based Iranian-American businessman with dual citizenship:

“Rather than moderating the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism, the flawed nuclear deal is emboldening Iran to threateningly test ballistic missiles that can strike Israel and beyond, to kill more Syrian people in defense of the barbaric Assad regime, and now reportedly to have the IRGC’s intelligence arm arrest yet another American citizen for charges yet to be made clear.  Iran’s threatening behavior will worsen if the Administration does not work with Congress to enact stronger measures to push back, including renewal of the expiring Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 and targeted sanctions against Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and against any Iranian official found to have participated in the unjust detainment of American citizens.”

In addition to Siamak Zamazi, Iran has also wrongfully imprisoned American citizens Pastor Saeed Abedini, Amir Hekmati, and Robert Levinson.
