Top talent from the Chicago Jazz Festival leads late night jam session
HotHouse is synonymous with presenting the city’s best jazz music. Since 1987 the intrepid non-profit organization has organized innovative festivals and brought to the stage some of the worlds most expressive talent. As an itinerant presenter since 2007, HotHouse has been collaborating with institutions and venues throughout the region to continue programming adventurous cultural work.
Since 1991, HotHouse has organized “aftersets”. These concerts happen after the official program taking place at the Chicago Jazz Festival concludes for the evening. It is an opportunity for many local and visiting artists to create an entirely
spontaneous concert. Usually the melange of talent on the band stand is comprised of people who never perform together. The mash up is a thrilling way to experience jazz as it often used to be.
This year HotHouse’s Legendary Aftersets will be led by powerhouse musicians Edward Wilkerson Jr., Tatsu Aoki, James Sanders, Marcus Evans, and Sylvia Bolognesi. Artists from the Chicago Jazz Festival will join in. 100% of the ticket revenue will be paid directly to the artists. Food and Beverages will be sold at the concert.
The concert takes place in the corner store of the iconic “pink building” at Bryn Mawr and Sheridan Road. The Edgewater Beach Apartments has a fabled association with live music and dancing – long before landfill filled in the park to make Lake Shore Drive. This pop-up concert is part of HotHouse’s initiative to return to the EBA quality arts programming.

ABOUT HOTHOUSE
HotHouse was founded in 1987 to provide a forum for expression in the arts that was under-represented elsewhere in the Chicago cultural community. It was created primarily to curate multi-arts and educational activities that bolstered the prominence of innovative artists working in the margins of the commercial market and to facilitate events that amplified a variety of progressive social movements. The New York Times wrote of HotHouse “few clubs anywhere offer a wider range of first-rate world music, from wildly vibrant Afro-pop to avant-garde jazz than HotHouse.” And a “Best of Chicago” award opined “from European avant-garde jazz acts that don’t even play in this hemisphere to performance art to world music to the city’s more esoteric acts, [HotHouse] has consistently pulled in some of the planet’s most innovative acts.”
For two decades the organization maintained two award-winning cultural centers where it presented its programs-the first catalyzed growth in the Wicker Park neighborhood (1987-1995) and the second spurred development in the South Loop in downtown Chicago (1995-2007). The board of directors is currently pursuing plans to build its third site. In 2016, HotHouse announced a new contract with The Alhambra Palace Restaurant where it will be helping redevelop the downtown venue as a new home for adventurous music.
