Former Rep. Gus Savage’s brother dies at age 84

Randolph W. Savage, 84, the brother of former Cong. Gus Savage (D-2^nd), died Wednesday night at Ingalls Hospital in Harvey, Illinois, after a two-month illness, according to his son, Randy, who Thursday confirmed his father’s death.

“He was a brilliant man, a modest man, a family man who was married 52-years to my mother,” said Randy Savage. “He was a tremendous father and person. He was a humble, fun-loving and modest man, “ said Savage who is an only child.

Reached in Washington, D.C., former Rep. Savage said of his brother, “Randy was a steady, responsible and devoted husband, father, and worker.” He said his brother was the youngest  of four sons. They had one sister. Cong. Savage is the only survivor of the five children.

Mr. Savage, who was born in Detroit, Michigan, was honorably discharged from the Army during World War II.

Mr. Savage worked for 35-years with the State of Illinois. He supervised the unit that wrote the law governing unemployment compensation.

He was married to his wife, Elizabeth, for 52-years. He is survived by his son, Randy, a brother, former Rep. Gus Savage (D-2^nd), and he has one granddaughter, one great granddaughter and one great grandson.

Funeral arrangements are pending, but Rep. Savage will give the eulogy.
