Englewood leaders and community residents speak out against proposed liquor store
The Englewood Political Taskforce, P.E.A.C.E, Action Coalition against Englewood and community residents held a press conference this weekend to voice their opposition to a proposed liquor store less than 200 feet away from the location of a mass shooting.
The site of the proposed liquor store is 6601 S. Halsted, former location of the Old Spin Cycle Laundromat in Chicago.
Protesters said they are demanding that the alderman along with the city of Chicago find a business that will not add to the already negative label that plagues their community. A little over a year ago, six people were shot and two killed at Church’s Chicken less than 200 feet from the proposed liquor store location. And this past summer there was a retaliatory shooting on the south end of the 6600 block of Halsted.
“We cannot and will not allow another criminal magnet to this section of Englewood,†organizers stated. “We demand that the Alderman along with the city of Chicago find a business that will not add to the already negative label that plagues our community.â€
