Congressional Black Caucus Chair “strongly” urges confirmation of Debo P. Adegbile as Assistant Attorney General of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division

Marcia Fudge’s Statement on Upcoming Senate Vote to Confirm Debo P. Adegbile as Assistant Attorney General of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chair Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement on tomorrow’s Senate floor vote to confirm Debo P. Adegbile for Assistant Attorney General of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division:

“Since being nominated by President Obama to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, Debo Adegbile has been under an unwarranted attack. Individuals in the media and in this Congress have worked to diminish and discredit Mr. Adegbile’s character and his record of defending the civil and constitutional rights of those in this country who need it most. Every person should be able to exercise their constitutional right to legal representation, and we certainly cannot prevent attorneys from doing their best work on behalf of their clients. Mr. Adegbile should not be penalized or punished for either.

“Throughout his career, Mr. Adegbile has had an unwavering commitment to justice and integrity. His work ethic has earned the respect of those within the civil rights community and from colleagues who have argued cases with and against him. Twice, Mr. Adegbile has defended the Voting Rights Act before the U.S Supreme Court; he spent more than ten years serving in various leadership positions at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s (NAACP) Legal Defense Fund; he has served as Senior Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee; and he has dedicated his time to volunteering, teaching, and to pro-bono legal work in the communities of which he has been a part. Mr. Adegbile is esteemed for his understanding of complex issues within our justice system and is admired for his ability to lead and build consensus in finding viable and applicable solutions.

“Neither Mr. Adegbile’s ability nor his commitment to advocating for the civil and constitutional rights of all Americans can be disputed. I strongly urge the Senate to confirm Mr. Adegbile as the next Assistant Attorney General of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.”
