CHICAGO, IL – On October 24, 2013, The Chicago Southside NAACP Health Committee will kick off its Fighting Childhood Obesity Campaign at Powell Elementary School.

This health kick campaign is a call to action for parents, students, schools and community residents to eat, shop and provide healthy meals, snacks as well as physical activity to children. The hope is to end the growth trend of childhood obesity.

Chicago Southside NAACP, Health Committee  “Turns up” to help put an end to  America’s  growing trend childhood obesity.

What: 4pm -5:30pm participants learn to identify the relationship between childhood obesity and the chronic lifestyle diseases that effect children.

Where: Powell Elementary School, 7511 S. Shore Drive.

“Research suggest that one in three of our children are overweight or obese, putting them at risk for a variety of health problems & diseases, including heart disease, gallbladder disease, asthma, Type 2 diabetes and cancer.”

Chicago Southside NAACP proposes the following to combat childhood obesity:

The Southside NAACP will host a series of educational seminars to educate parents, teachers, school staff and administration on the importance of nutritious meals and snacks to end childhood obesity and promote academic excellence. The goal of the meetings is to bring awareness to the alarming and life threatening effects of childhood obesity.
