WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman G. K. Butterfield issued the following statement on the passing of Civil Rights legend and icon, Dr. Gardner C. Taylor.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Gardner C. Taylor, one of our country’s foremost teachers of faith and leaders in the civil rights movement.  He devoted a lifetime to spreading the gospel and used his voice as a champion in the struggle for equality and democracy.

“Dr. Taylor had a ministerial career that spanned six decades and was considered the dean of the nation’s black preachers.  A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Taylor was a revered leader and homiletical authority.  He will be greatly missed but his legacy will live on in all those he touched, influenced and inspired.  Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
