African-American Middle-School Age Brothers and Young Authors among talented guests at 2011 Savannah’s Children’s Book Festival Savannah, GA

(BlackNews.com) — The 2011 Savannah Children’s Book Festival is set for this Saturday, November 19th, in Savannah, Georgia. Among the invited children’s book authors and illustrators from around the country will be Raleigh’s own Miles and William Rabun, the young authors of My Grandma’s Backyard. Many other talented guests in the 2011 lineup include Alyssa Capucilli, author of more than 50 books including Katy Duck and Biscuit, and Kadir Nelson, author/illustrator of Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African-Americans, and artist of the album cover for “Michael” by the late pop icon Michael Jackson.
This is the 2nd year the Rabun brothers, now 13 and 11, have been invited to this national festival after last year’s success of My Grandma’s Backyard and its accompanying Fun Song CD with the 35,000 people the festival drew. My Grandma’s Backyard, a tale that reflects two African-American brothers’ adventures with their grandmother was written by Miles and William Rabun at 7 and 5 years old. Professional Illustrator Tony Moore of Atlanta, Georgia provided vivid color to My Grandma’s Backyard which also includes a fun activity section for kids to explore and talk about their own backyard adventures along with vocabulary words, reading comprehension exercises, and games with an answer key.
Miles and William Rabun and My Grandma’s Backyard have been featured on WRAL TV’s Living the Legacy Series, Carolina Parent, Kidsville News, The News & Observer, The Independent Weekly, Total Connection, and Durham’s Partnership for Children Newsletter; The Rabun brothers are also a part of the Duke University Talent Identification Program for academically gifted students.
