The Chicago Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression will hold a press conference today, Thursday, January 26th, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 125 E. 26th St., Chicago, at 5:30 p.m., to denounce President Donald Trump calls for intervention by the FEDS in Chicago. A broad array of community leaders will be on hand to press this point.

“We don’t need Donald Trump to send armed forces into Chicago to deal with crime,” declared Frank Chapman, Field Organizer of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, in announcing the news conference. “What we need is democratic community control of the police through an all-elected Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC).”

An ordinance establishing CPAC is in the City Council, currently sponsored by 10 Council members. The text of the ordinance is here.

“The ‘carnage’ in Chicago is at the hands of the police, who have murdered and tortured hundreds of young Black and Latino men and women in Chicago. At the same time they have proven themselves unable to do anything to stop organized crime violence,” Chapman added. “How can the community trust the police when many have seen that police are so often part of the problem, shaking down and shielding criminals and allowing the steady flow of guns and drugs into our neighborhoods?”

Chapman declared that community control of the police would be the fastest and surest way of ending this situation and bringing peace to Chicago neighborhoods.
