Senator Raoul Urges Help for Haiti in Hurricane Recovery

SPRINGFIELD, IL — Illinois State Senator Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago 13th) issued the following statement:

Most of you are probably aware of the death and devastation caused in Haiti by Hurricane Matthew, the strongest storm to hit the Caribbean region in nearly 10 years. In addition to the damage inflicted by the storm itself, a humanitarian crisis is brewing, with the Haitian government unable to provide food, water and shelter to everyone displaced by the disaster. As if that weren’t enough, the floodwaters Matthew left behind have made the island’s population vulnerable to water-borne diseases such as cholera.

As the son of Haitian immigrant parents, I hold the people of Haiti in my thoughts and prayers at this time. I hope you will join me in contributing as you are able to relief, recovery and public health efforts. I’ve had the privilege of being involved with International Child Care and Grace Children’s Hospital in Haiti, and if you are looking for ways to assist in this time of critical need, I urge you to visit us.internationalchildcare.org/hurricanematthew to learn more and make a donation.
