Chicago singer-songwriter, Lester Rey, will be hosting a video release party on March 4 as a follow up to his EP release in early January of this year. This video, for the single titled Andar, is the first of five being released this year. It is directed by Gererdo Romero and Dequita Tate. The whole event is presented by Nuestro Rudio the Chicago based blog dedicated to an exploration of Latin Alternative music.
The EP , Blue Lion, was released January 9 to a hungry crowd in Lester’s home neighborhood of Pilsen. The Chicago native brings his own mix of salsa, funk and cha cha cha and infuses it with a retro vibe to create a modern sound he calls Bugaloo Urbano. The music has a 60’s Rumba feel mixed with the social consciousness of hip-hop and a modern alternative latin melody. As a singer, songwriter, and producer, Lester Rey performs his modern Boogaloo with a backing band called Los Leones. The band consists of guitar, drums, congera and background vocals.
His music is inspired by musicians he saw playing in church. The self taught musician began by playing salsa, merengue and other Latin Caribbean genres. As a kid in Chicago he fell in love with hip hop artists like mos def and Lupe fiasco and its socially conscious message and found a way to infuse it with Chicago music like house, juke and many more.
Come see Lester Rey perform live on stage at Citlalin gallery and theatre in the Chicago neighborhood of Pilsen from 7p.m. to 11p.m. Special performances by Chicago Puerto Rican poet Logan Lu and DJ Kinky P. Join us later that night as he debuts his new video. Visit LesterRey.com
