In the Midst of Grief, Loss of NYPD Officer Prompts Examination of Sentencing Options

NEW YORK — National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in response to the slaying of NYPD Officer Randolph Holder:
“A tragedy like the murder of NYPD Officer Randolph Holder can overwhelm a community looking for solutions to street violence and criminal justice reform.
“On behalf of the National Urban League Movement across the country, I offer deepest sympathy to Officer Holder’s family, his fellow NYPD officers and the tight-knit Queens community of Little Guyana that nurtured him and grieves his loss. We pray for justice and healing.
“The grievous slaying of Officer Holder has thrown intense scrutiny on a judge’s decision to place the suspected shooter, Tyrone Howard, in a drug-treatment program earlier this year following Howard’s guilty plea on a drug charge. While we welcome this national discussion of alternative sentencing, we are hopeful that our collective grief over Officer Holder’s loss will not cloud our judgement on the issue.”
