Tell Congress: Quit Playing Games With National Security; Add Your Name
Congressional Republicans are playing a reckless game with our national security.
From Congressman Tammy Duckworth
In December, Congress worked out a budget deal for most government agencies, but conservative members refused to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security in order to make a political point about President Obama’s executive order on immigration.
Now, the Department of Homeland Security’s funding is set to expire in 17 days, and Congressional leaders have yet to pass a clean bill that would keep the department running.
After the far right shut down the government in 2013, I wrote to you that it was time to stop manufacturing crises around essential government funding. So I’m appalled that members of Congress are continuing to make irresponsible threats, this time targeting the department charged with keeping our country safe.
If the Department of Homeland Security shuts down, thousands of national security personnel would be sent home, putting our nation at risk. Other staff, like Secret Service agents or active duty Coast Guard members, would be forced to work without pay.
The men and women who stepped up to protect our country deserve better than worrying about bills while Congress plays games with their paychecks.
It’s long past time for a Congressional debate on immigration reform. But the solution is to vote on a comprehensive reform bill, not to jeopardize the funding that protects our nation.
Please join me in urging Congressional Republicans to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
