Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Secures 60-Year Sentence in Shooting Death of High School Student
A Chicago man who gunned down a 15-year-old Chicago charter school student who was sitting on the front porch of his home in the West Englewood neighborhood has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the 2010 murder, according to the Office of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.
Shawn Rudolph, 24, of the 5700 block of South Indiana Avenue, was previously found guilty of First Degree Murder and Attempt First Degree Murder in connection with the shooting death of Andrew Powell, 15, a student at Perspectives Charter School in Chicago.
According to prosecutors, on the evening of Sept. 30, 2010, Andrew Powell was sitting on the front porch of his home located in the 7200 block of South Hermitage with several family members when Rudolph emerged from a gangway across the street and started shooting at the individuals on the porch. Rudolph fired several shots, one of which fatally struck Powell in the head.
Rudolph was sentenced during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building in Chicago before Judge Diane Cannon, who imposed the 60-year sentence.
State’s Attorney Alvarez thanked Assistant State’s Attorneys James Murphy and Mariano Reyna and the Chicago Police Department for their work in this case.
