Illinois Tollway Diversity Official honored by Chicago Business Group
DOWNERS GROVE, IL – The Illinois Tollway’s Chief of Diversity and Strategic Development, Gustavo Giraldo, is being honored Tuesday by a Chicago-based business group for his work in building stronger ties with minority-owned companies and community groups.
The Cosmopolitan Chamber of Commerce recognized Giraldo’s achievement by bestowing on him a “Friend of the Chamber†Award at its 45th annual gala and banquet in Chicago.
Founded in 1933, the group helps develop and promote minority businesses in the Chicago area, including working with public agencies such as the Illinois Tollway to ensure those companies can compete for state contracts. Giraldo was recognized by the organization for his dedication to providing information about Tollway projects and his efforts in encouraging minority-owned businesses to bid for Tollway contracts.
“His exemplary work aids the Tollway by ensuring minority-owned businesses and contractors are aware of the opportunities they have to participate in Tollway projects,†Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur said.
Giraldo, who began working two years ago as the Tollway’s first chief of diversity, said he is gratified to receive the honor from a respected business and community group.
“I wanted to make sure from Day One that I would not leave behind any organization that can help us achieve our goals,†said Giraldo. “Getting a pat on the back from an advocacy group feels good.â€
Giraldo has worked closely with the chamber to engage minority-owned businesses and inform them of the opportunities they have to participate in Tollway projects.
“We are just so appreciative of his efforts to provide opportunities for small business owners to work with the Tollway,†said Carnice Carey, executive director of the Cosmopolitan Chamber of Commerce.
