Jesse White holds Illinois’ Fourth official U.S. Constitution and Citizenship Day Celebration

Marks the 225^th Signing of the Constitution; 100 People Sworn-In as Citizens

 

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White today held the state’s fourth official U.S. Constitution and Citizenship Day Celebration.  The event also marks the 225^th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. One hundred people from 32 countries were sworn-in as citizens at the celebration.

“Today’s celebration is an opportunity for us to commemorate the document that laid the foundation for our great nation,” White said. “In witnessing people from other nations taking the oath of citizenship, we reflect on what it means to be an American.”

The event, which included a Naturalization Ceremony, parade of flags and musical selections, was held at Richard J. Daley Plaza.  U.S. District Court Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan presided over the Naturalization Ceremony.

 “Let us all take a moment to reflect on the many freedoms our Constitution guarantees us, and the bond we now share with those becoming citizens of the United States of America,” White said.

White honored the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for their commitment to the new citizens of the United States of America. Over the past four years, more than 400 people from over 65 countries have been sworn-in as citizens during this ceremony.

Officials from the U.S. District Court, U.S. Navy, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, De La Salle Institute, and the UNO Charter School participated in the ceremony.
