Chicago, IL – Can you imagine your son being missing for 3 days and the police are not telling you anything? Can you fathom that your daughter died in a hotel room and every media source seems to know the cause of death but you? How do these parents cope? Every year in Black America, there are almost 8,000 homicides and over 90% of the assailants are of the same race as the victims. How are these parents coping? Every year in Black America there are in excess to 40,000 shootings. How are the victims and their families coping?
Â
Suicide is now the third leading killer of Black males – after homicides and accidents. Again, how do the families of the survivors cope? Depression now affects 10% of the population and it’s twice as many females suffering from depression. Large numbers of Americans, particularly African Americans, are experiencing hopelessness after being unemployed for years.
Â
How are Americans coping? Is alcohol or hard drugs the answer? Â Ironically, during recessions alcohol and hard drug sales increase. I ran across a new book that addresses the above. Faith Nuggets to Live By written by Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu. How do we explain how some family members grieve for years and others for hours? Could it be their faith? How do we explain how some people are unemployed for years, but they still have hope, while others exacerbate the problem with drugs? Could it be their faith?
Â
What is faith? Is everyone born with the same amount? How do you develop it? What is the difference between high expectations in yourself and faith in God? This excellent book is filled with over 100 faith nuggets that will inspire, encourage and empower you. How do Trayvon and Whitney’s parents – and all the other grieving parents use their faith when their hearts are broken? This book will help to answer that question.
Â
Too many times in the Black community, we are in denial about depression, hopelessness, drug addiction and suicidal tendencies. There is too much death in our communities. We must stop the homicides. The shootings and gang violence must cease. Alcohol is not the answer! Drugs are not the solution! These are simply demonic spirits that destroy the lives of the deceived. What slavery did not destroy in the Black family is now being destroyed by drugs. There are now mothers abandoning their children for drugs. This was unheard of during slavery. There is too much anger, frustration and despair. We cannot continue to turn on each other. Our community is in need of healing. I strongly recommend Faith Nuggets to Live By. We must learn how to be strong in crisis. We must learn who can really be depended on in a time of need. We must learn how to live by faith.
