What every parent should know about the College Admissions Process
Arlington, VA (BlackNews.com) — Each year, high-school seniors across the country begin the exciting, frustrating, and overwhelming college application process. How can parents help prepare their children for this critical step in their academic career, when many don’t know or remember what is required?
Dr. Nicki Washington answers this question and more in her new book Prepped for Success: What Every Parent Should Know About the College Application Process.
Dr. Julianne Malveaux, President of Bennett College for Women and acclaimed economist, author, and commentator says, “It takes a dynamic young scholar who has navigated the waters of success to share her wisdom with those who aspire to it. Dr. Nicki Washington has provided a phenomenal service in authoring this book, and we are in her debt for her sage advice. Students, parents, and counselors can all gain from the tips she offers here.”
Prepped for Success identifies every critical step in the college admissions process, including creating a resume, identifying majors and schools, understanding and preparing for standardized tests, completing the application and FAFSA, identifying types and sources of financial aid, post-acceptance/rejection activities, and more. A special chapter for parents of international students applying to U.S. schools is also included.
Dr. Washington also discusses the importance of parents and students starting as early as the 9th grade, forming a “team” consisting of counselors, teachers, and mentors, and utilizing the Internet to research information on careers, majors, schools, financial aid, and more. After reading Prepped for Success, parents are sure to be well-informed and well-prepared to assist their 9th-12th grade student in preparing for this important process.
