The Avalon Regal Theater: A Continuing Legacy under Mr. Jerald Gary’s Ownership and Operation

In a recent conversation with Mr. Jerald Gary, the owner of the Avalon Regal Theater, sheds light on recent developments within his establishment. Presented here is a summary of our discussion.

The Avalon Regal Theater has maintained its operational status throughout its history, albeit not yet accessible to the general public. Despite this, challenges persist in the form of insufficient support from Alderman Michelle Harris and her former aide, Al Rider. It’s worth noting that Rider now holds a position at Regal Mile Studios, an unrelated entity, which Mr. Gary claims has expressed interest in purchasing the theater. However, Mr. Gary has declined these offers.

Last year, Lionsgate Entertainment Company visited Chicago for the filming of Curtis James Jackson III, commonly known as 50 Cent’s TV series “Power” at the Avalon Regal Theater.  According to Mr. Jerald Gary, owner of the Avalon Regal Theater, an incident occurred involving an irate Alderman Michelle Harris from the 8th Ward. Harris sought to halt the filming, but Lionsgate staff demonstrated their proper clearance from the city and proceeded with their work. Following this, it’s alleged that Alderman Harris approached Mr. Gary with a plea to cease operations, despite Mr. Gary having both a signed contract with Lionsgate and city authorization. This encounter was marked by intense emotions and confrontational interactions, reflecting a pattern of similar behavior over the preceding years. A letter from Mr. Gary’s legal team was sent to Alderman Harris, addressing her conduct and urging her to halt any infringing behavior. It appears that those warnings were not taken into consideration. As a result of that Mr. Gary has proceeded with a lawsuit against all players involved.

To dispel any misconceptions, it must be emphasized that the Avalon Regal Theater and Regal Mile Studio are entirely distinct entities, as affirmed by Mr. Jerald Gary, the theater’s owner. However, the Regal Mile Studio’s website (recently removed) featured the mural artwork displayed on Mr. Gary’s Avalon Regal Theater, potentially misleading visitors and infringing on Mr. Gary’s intellectual property rights. This has raised concerns about the possible misinterpretation of the two organizations being one, potentially causing Mr. Gary to miss out on business opportunities.

While many would applaud a young community leader’s positive contributions, the situation surrounding Mr. Jerald Gary’s efforts for the Avalon Regal Theater paints a different picture. During the previous year, there was a fundraiser held at a local high school purportedly to support the theater failed to involve Mr. Gary, the actual owner. Additionally, during a visit from hip-hop artist Kanye West (“Ye”) to express his backing for the theater, Alderman Harris and Rider seemingly capitalized on the occasion for photo opportunities, falsely projecting their support. Mr. Gary had previously been subjected to alleged bullying tactics by Harris and her associates, leading to disruptions of his events and even his unjust arrest during a children’s music video rehearsal. The motivations behind these actions could stem from attempts to obstruct the theater’s revenue generation.

According to Mr. Gary, various antagonists harbor covetous intentions toward the Avalon Regal Theater, seeking to claim ownership. Despite this adversity, Mr. Gary, along with his legal team, remains committed to unveiling the truth about those involved in attempts to pressure him into relinquishing his property. Since purchasing the Avalon Regal Theater in 2014, Mr. Gary has permitted several brands, such as Glade, Nike, BET, Showtime, VH1, Adidas, and Chicago Magazine, to utilize the venue’s distinctive architecture for commercials and creative projects.

In light of these challenges, it is crucial not to be misled by the deceptive tactics employed by Mr. Gary’s adversaries. The Avalon Regal Theater remains outside the scope of any sale, and it bears no affiliation with Regal Mile Studios. Supporting Mr. Gary’s endeavor to restore the Avalon Regal Theater to its community-serving glory is a call to action worth heeding.
